I sometimes wonder if Goku's SS3 transformation was even a big deal in Japan since the OST carried that scene in the dub.

You can look at it this way. Buu has three personas, three sides if you will, the Good persona, which controls Mr. Buu and Fat Buu when he's not angry, the Evil persona, which controls Evil Buu, Super Buu and Fat Buu when he's angry. The third persona or side, is the Kid Buu one, which controls Kid Buu, or probably more accurately, doesn't control. The third side ala Kid Buu represents total anarchy, and it only surfaces when the other two sides fail to take control of Buu, and this only happens when both the Good and the Evil of Buu are expelled from him. The Evil and Good personas together keep the Kid Buu persona in check. When Fat Buu got angry, this was a sign that the Evil persona wanted to take control, resulting in Buu literally splitting because a conflict was made between the Good and the Evil. When Mr. Buu was expelled from Super Buu, another conflict arose, but this time between the Kid Buu persona and the Evil persona, and of course the Evil persona could not resist the influence of the Kid Buu persona, which expelled the Evil persona from itself. Kid Buu was the original side, and the Good and Evil sides only came after he absorbed the Dai Kaioshin (Good) and the South Kaioshin (Evil). This does not mean that the South Kaioshin was necessarily evil, rather the Kid Buu persona merely influenced the other, South Kaioshin persona, to take a darker turn, resulting in the Evil persona being created. If you want to look up where they might have gotten some inspiration, along with every other "human fighter throwing an energy projectile" look up 'Red Sand Palm', an old Kung-Fu training and assassination technique which has a ton of myth behind it.

There is one with just a finger too, but I forget its actual name. They would have to put out the light in a paper lantern while being I want to say at least 10 feet (~3m) away without breaking the paper using just exerted "ki".

Besides all of that, I don't think they went into heavy detail as the mythos was sort of already there, but I could be wrong.
