To leave that narrative mess before the worst series of trainwreck occured. You have to consider that he himself was an author. "Naruto" was a freaking mess. Being part of the story had to be physically PAINful for him.

I'll give Kishimoto props for having him stay dead even if I liked Jiraiya. Most shonenshit writers would have made some asspull bring him back in 5 chapters.
