The show reminds me of Dora the Explorer without the fourth wall breaking. Also, the simple and varied characters designs attract a lot of autists(Touhou retards for example) and cosplayers, not to mention the speculah crowd with all the post apocalyptic foreshadowing. It's a simple anime that does what it tries to do well, but it isn't really anything more or overall better than some other shows airing this season, it just got lucky to hit the right cords of certain fanbases. Etotama and Kemono Friends are using 3d for different things. Etotama was a showpiece, while Kemono Friends is something like a cheap puppet show.

KF is riffing on children's programming, so the low-budget aesthetic is oddly appropriate.

My enjoyment of the show is part genuine, and part awe at watching a poker player bluff his way through the world's shittiest hand.

I don't think you're giving them enough credit. The mysterious worldbuilding is too subtle to be an accident. The Friends are all likeable, and dramatic irony drives the central quest forward in an interesting way. Dialog in each individual scene is funny and tight, with well-timed beats.

The 3d is awful, but the creatives don't have any way of changing that aside from a larger budget. The other parts of the show that are truly awful, like the educational bits, might be intentional. As in it might be a metacommentary on how kids programs are forced to interrupt the flow of the show to deliver these sorts of dry lectures. They don't even bother cleaning up the static or having a voice actor read it instead. There's no reason they wouldn't have done these unless they wanted it to be terrible. In short, I think they knew their show looked bad, so they leaned into that to achieve an aesthetic. That's why I think they're playing a bad hand well.

He was complimenting the show even though I disagree with him about the education bits, since I kinda like them, they add to that nostalgic feel for me.

It's a nice show because you can look at it as just a simple show to turn your brain off at and have fun, but there's also enough there and it's not too in your face about it that you can have fun analyzing it and looking deeper into the show.

It bothers me that people watch this and think that there wasn't any effort put into it. All you need to do is look at the staffs social media accounts to see they care very much about the reception and have worked very hard on the project.

Explain this Friends.

Show basically follows an "obstacle of the week" formula something LWA should've done instead of a 'nothing happens for 20 episodes and shove everything of interest to the last few episodes' formula it seems to be going for, with new girls/animals with different abilities and costumes every week, personality-wise they're basically interchangeable for the most part, since there isn't really much time for each of them to get any sort of characterization. The 'drops IQ' meme is because the girls/animals are ignorant to man-made things and the MC has to teach or show them how they work, in contrast, the MC learns about nature and animals. It does a well job at keeping you interested, since there's always something happening, and also simple but 'suspenseful' endings. There's also an apparent darker side to it.

Personally I don't think people are going ape shit over this for its funny and cute nature, there are certainly cuter and funnier shows airing this season.
