Yuya in the anime is more like an overall circus artistm which is reflected into his deck aside the Magicians.

In the manga, he is more like an illusionist, which reflects into the overall plot of the manga. His performapals in it are also more like ''assistants'' or tamers, referencing him being a magician and the Odd-Eyes are named after things that aren't exactly grasped or are ''mystic'', Mirage, Phantom and Persona, which is related to the whole World Illusion plot.

Now I still don't get the overall Reiji's Zero theme in the manga aside his name.

If you were able to go through the first two years of GX and 5D's after the Dark Signer arc, you should be able to watch Zexal.

You might not be used to the characters at first but character development is one of Zexal's defining points so I recommend watching it.
