Manga is decent, although it starts getting repetitive after a while. It has a strong finish, just don't expect any solidly closed resolution for the love stuff.

The anime is initially better than the manga, IMO - like how they tie several earlier separate stories from the manga into story arcs. However, after a while the anime falls into filler hell, and Ranma's filler writers are often really stupid and small minded. For example, one recurring type of filler story is Ranma facing a martial artist that has a super mystic-like technique, like energy blasts or projecting animal attacks, but it all turns out to be a trick somehow. The issue is that when the canon stories start introducing special attacks for Ranma too, creating hurricanes and energy blasts, the filler just ignores those completely and continues featuring stories about fake techniques and Ranma never uses his new attacks in the filler.

And there's also how the manga never animated the manga ending. Both the tv series and OVA end with adaptations of random characters that don't give any sense of closure at all.

Only a handful of characters on Ranma have any actual honor, and the only ones I can think of are ones that don't fight.

Ranma is capable of some nasty shit, but JUST enough so that he doesn't go down to the level of shit that other characters, so he can still be the main character and considers a somewhat-stand up guy.

Ranma pretending to be Ryoga's sister is one thing, but remember that Ryoga was going to try to use the Koi Rod on Akane, missed and hit Ranma, and was going to take her into the woods and kill her, because he didn't know what else to do.

Remember, Ranma is a comedy/harem/martial artist thingy, so you're not SUPPOSED to take all of the shit that goes on too seriously until the manga itself is like "okay, shit's gotten serious!"
That's why nobody is laughing about the shit Herb and Saffron pulled off, but Ryoga doing that shit is just played off as "silly Ryoga!"

To me, that's what makes Ranma such a great character.

He doesn't have much development, but he has a lot of layers to his character, so he's not just martial artist A or boring harem protagonist B.

You can have people fall in love with him, despite his flaws, but it's not hard to see why. You can have him be the protagonist and "the good guy", but people who hate him aren't automatically portrayed as evil or bad. You can have him be a ladykiller when he's playing it up, but kind of shy when it's time to get serious. Despite being able to turn into a pretty girl, he's very specific about about his mascuinity, and even goes out to say that he won't eat ice cream as a man, or doesn't wear a bra and panties, because that shit's for women.
BUT if it's time to get something he wants, that rule goes right out of the window, and he knows how to use it too. He's very prideful about how strong and skilled he is as a martial artist, but despite tricking people in other measures, doesn't use cheap tricks like glue or blinding powder in a fight.

Maybe it's just the clash of genres and length of the series that helps, but a lot of people get away without having to bother making their main character interesting, and even though Ranma 1/2's characters have little to no depth to them, the puddle is at least pretty fucking wide
