well the novel was written in like 2002 or something. playing games and anime and not being on the internet would be a perfectly acceptable things for a shut in to not do. besides the anime wanted to introduce the audience to these things and otaku culture. i recall him constantly watching tv and in the manga and light novel he did hard drugs, that's pretty plausible in that time period. the anime wanted a broader audience though
