Reading the manga kind of hurt some of the early episodes to me since several stories got their punchline completely wrecked by the anime, but most of the content is still there.

The last couple of seasons also were pretty good. It's really only the middle of the show that was really weak - when they started making tons of anime-only stories, but didn't really know how to do them well yet.

In the middle, the characters pretty much became watered down to one trope.

But like you said, there was a point where the entire show got a quality upgrade and became funny again. It's a real shame they stopped making episodes.
