I'm not sure if they're still alive, when the documentary was made they gave off the impression of the sort of oblivious parents. That is, his mom was happy he was doing Something, and his dad was sure he wasn't doing anything at all. I'm no expert in reading foreign people's body language, but I don't think they know anything about Eva besides "Oh, yes, my son does that.".

Oh, I'm almost sure his father absolutely hated him and his mother was over-attached to him. He also didn't finish college as far as I know. For traditional parents this is almost as bad as gambling.
I also think Anno's trauma is more linked to later parts of his life and to the television "environment". My old man worked as a producer on national television and he developed a lot of the same character traits as Anno and Gendo. He even looked similar. I think it's that sort of enviromnent that gets to you, makes you introverted and self-destructive. When you're filming something people are always sabotaging you (and themselves) and there is never enough time to do everything properly and by the book.

Maybe because I didn't watch Evangelion during the 90s when it was the craze and don't have the nostalgia for it. But I actually think Eva as a series is really average.
