I've been watching anime since the mid eighties. I saw Macross before Robotech finished airing here. I had 4th generation bootleg betamax tapes of Amor Hunter Mellowlink. I watched every Brave series as they aired. I lived in Yokohama for ten years, and waited IN QUEUE for the laserdisc release of the original To Terra. I've had lunch with Kunihiko Ikuhara, smoked a cigarette with Watanabe after a Seat Belts show. I've done it all, I've seen it all. I am a qualified expert.

And Maid Dragon is THE greatest anime I have ever seen. Bar none. This is where the medium has been going since day one. From the very first cel, it was all leading to Maid Dragon.

Mark my words, this show will go down in history. It will change anime in a way not seen since Shogoki took her first steps in NGE.

Kyoani has made some hits, but they aren't the money making monoliths we like to think of them as. If you're talking about the shows that made the most money in the 2000-2010 decade those would be Bakemonogatari, Gundam seed, seed destiny, Macross Frontier and Geass, with K-On and Haruhi in the 6th and 7th spot respecitvely. Clannad is barely even on radar with 25k average sales compared to Haruhi's 43k.

Since 2010 Madoka, three seasons of Love Live, Osomatsu-san, Fate/Zero and Attack on Titan have all made more money than any Kyoani show.

There's more to making profit than just DVD/BD sales. In fact, Haruhi has yet to be topped because it sold so much toy/figurine/posters/etc. I think it still has the highest viewership as well.

But you're right that every other KyoAni show since has trailed behind, with a small upswing with K-On. You really think KyoAni would get the message and go back to better source material. But I guess they feel content just being a moe factory now.

Makes sense. Also because the staff there want to have total control over their work. So they might be fine with lower profits if they can have total control. Also, its not like their shows are doing horribly. Even the worst selling KyoAni show is still getting ratings and profits the other studios would love to have.

But I still say they should hire out for some better writers and storyboard developers. They have the best animation in the world, but I still can't sit through a boring show.
