Because they actually mention and emphasize the German part in the show (having her be from Germany, speak German, German NERV branch), whereas I'm pretty sure the fact that her father was American was only revealed in the apocrypha (though with the last name Langley presumably he would have to be some sort of Anglo). Even if they did actually mention his nationality in the show, it must have been so much in passing that I didn't know it for years and was under the assumption that Asuka was half-Japanese and Half-German, which I think most non-serious Asukafags still are.
