What's the most pretentious anime you've ever watched?
Pretentious is a meaningless buzzword.
anything by yuasa

Kill la kill.
Probably Arjuna.
Ergo Proxy.

Boogiebop Phantom. Only newfriends would think that Ergo Proxy is the most pretentious animeStill doesn't mean it's not average at best
Pretentious doesn't mean bad. Usually it just means that the shows start to buckle under the weight of the writers and directors ambitions.
Even a pretentious failure of an anime is going to be a more interesting watch than your average licensed and committee produced adaptations. At best, you get a smart and artistically bold show that pushes boundries and rewards viewers efforts to understand. At worst you can get low budget slogs that are weighed down by endless exposition and cudgel-like applications of symbolism.
Don't get so worked up about something being pretentious or not. Just try to engage a show on its level and see if you enjoy watching it.

your favorite anime

S cry ed isn't pretentious though
>>153182939
Penguindrum or Bakemontagari. A lot what I watched of them felt forced to me.
Himouto! Umaru Chan
Utena
But Kaiba was pretty straightforward. Ergo Proxy, EVA and Cowboy Bebop are some actual contenders OP.
>>153183751
penguindrum made literally no sense
it's one of the few shows I regret watching
>>153182939
Angel's Egg
Wake Up! Girls since the word "pretentious" actually applies to it instead of being a buzzword unlike everything else mentioned ITT

If you thought Kaiba was pretentious you're probably either retarded or don't understand what the word means. If a show attempts to send a message and succeeds it's not pretentious. Pic related is an actually pretentious anime. It had aspirations of being intellectual and deep but failed on nearly every level of storytelling. Its writer wanted to write about intelligent characters but was too stupid to understand how they really think. He even got Asano Inio to do illustrations for it, which incidentally only served to show everyone why a Punpun anime would be horrible. I actually got second-hand embarrassment while watching this shit anime, that's how bad it was. When an anime is pretentious it shows big time. Comparing Yuasa's stuff to that is just shitposting.
>>153183290
Same.
Lurking to look for good shows.
Rainbow
Psycho pass
idk man
>>153186024
>>Psycho pass
This. In both meanings of the word.
Honestly it's like an adult crafted the bullet points of an interesting story with good characters and a strong sense of tragedy, even for the ones who thought they'd never suffer, and then handed the rest of the writing to 14-16 year olds going through their DEEP fase, who just watched Ergo Proxy, Lain and Eva, and then a bunch of generic shonen shows in conjucture.
>>153185194
Accel world was stupid shit that never tried to be deep or anything.
I don't get how this can be pretentious
NGE
Every episode of Phantom World opened with the MC going on about the psychological quirk or thought experiments and the episode was loosely centered around it, but the anime mostly consisted of a big blonde girl squeezing her magic tits.
>>153186024
>>153186069
I liked psycho-pass (only watched season 1) but i have to agree.
All this stupid book title dropping without any meaning was very annoying.
Remember the artist girl that made art out of dead people to represent shakespear storys and how they found that she was a copycat because her art wasn't "deep" enough?
Pretty much sums up the entire shows.
Also a police gun, that takes several seconds to get ready is total garbage
>>153186024
>>153186069
Psycho-Pass is so frustrating because the setting is the perfect platform to criticize modern Japan, with the horrors of being legally declared insane because of non-conformity, and for that to get arrested or killed if, at the moment the cops find you, you are overly stressed. Living in a plain apartment disguised by holograms, being a good metaphor about that society, as well as the cute police mascots.
At the end all those hints of dystopia had nothing to do with the plot and weren't much of a criticism but stuff that was just there for the sake of aesthetics. All while the plot was about how the villain was a psychopath because he was a lonely boy since the system that slaves everyone else didn't recognized his capability of being naughty.
>>153186090
Shit. I completely forgot my picture.

I think those are just shit. Haven't really seen any try hard symbolism ore misunderstood pshycological elements in his works
Durarara
I enjoy pretentious anime. Something about the way the Elevens do it is really compelling. It usually starts out as totally overbearing, but at some point the thing that makes Japan crazy always starts to leak through.
>>153182939
ergoproxy
>Kaiba
>pretentious
You need to stop.
>>153185867
This guy is right. F was the definition of pretentious. A stupid writer trying to write smart character was actually painful to watch. How anyone could get through more than a few minutes of that dialog is beyond me.
How can an anime be pretentious when you don't even exist?
>>153185867
Well said, i think truly pretentious stuff is pretty rare. Can't even think of a good example, maybe Elfen Lied
Either Yuru Yuri or Umaru.
>>153183290
This, I thought it was fine, worth watch despite head up own ass

Monogatari. You can't try and flesh out your harem anime by having talky bits.
>>153182960
Here we go again with this shit, every fucking word is just a fucking buzzword aint it? Fun, Philosophy, Pretentious, Edgy. Why even create terms to describe shit if its all gonna become a buzzword.
>>153186317
PP is basically minority report: anime edition.
>>153187983
If a word is misused so often that people have to make up their own definition it beccomes worthless.
It's not like there aren't any other words you can describe what you mean, if you are brave you just use them with the right meaning anyway.
Actually pretentious anime:
Ergo Proxy, Psycho-Pass, Lain, Mawaru Penguindrum, Elfen Lied, Kara no Kyoukai, Monogatari.
Anime that are called pretentious because people don't understand what the word means and just want to use it as a insult:
NGE, Shinsekai Yori, any Yuasa show, Mushishi, Kino no Tabi
>>153182939
Most of Tsurumaki's work feels pretentious to me. When he had a character ride a Vespa in Diebuster in order to make a blatant reference to one of his previous works, I couldn't help but feel like he was really fucking full of himself.
Flip Flappers. What a hot mess.
Kino's Journey
>>153188363
Yeah, was there a reason to have such an obscure McGuffin name to merely cover up what every fucker knew or at least cringed at when it was revealed?
Monogatari series.
>>153188411
Some of Flip Flappers metaphoric falls flat by itself but always fitted the general themes and some were smarter then people give it credit for.
Pretty sure most people just call it pretentious because it's easier then read up on those references to see if they were actually used well.
>>153187225
Nigga just close your eyes
Any anime that have characters dumping nonsense about philosophy and human nature in the form of long speeches out of fucking nowhere into the viewer strikes me as pretentious and shallow. It's like the writer is entering in the character and saying to everyone ''hey guise, look how smart I am! I know that this speech is totally out of character and context, but hey, I need to show how smart I am through long, boring speeches rather than by using my narrative and plot in a organic way''.
Something that instantly comes to mind when I talk about this matter is Kara no Kyoukai, Jesus, what a pretentious piece of shit that was.
>>153187983
It's not a buzzword if it's used correctly. It's a buzzword if you just use it to describe something you don't like.
>>153188411
Flip Flappers wasn't pretentious, it was plain crap.
>>153188363
I get where you're coming from with most of these, but I wouldn't call Lain pretentious. It does a good job of tackling grandiose ideas without straying far from the actual plot. Even the unusual presentation is justified when you consider the plot is largely from Lain's POV, and that she's mentally unstable.
>>153188736
I agree with what you're saying about philosophy info dumps to seem intelligent actually being shallow and childish. Does KnK really have those? I heard they were good movies, and not garbarge aimed at retards like the rest of the Fate series.
>>153190114
>I heard they were good movies, and not garbarge aimed at retards like the rest of the Fate series.
They are a more boring and pretentious version of Fate and Nasu works in general. Right at the first movie you already have what I described above, done in the worst possible manner.
>>153190484
Shit, I liked the directors other work. If I ignore the dialog can I just enjoy nice visuals, animation and scene composition?
>>153190608
> If I ignore the dialog can I just enjoy nice visuals, animation and scene composition?
Yes. The visuals are pretty nice, probably one of the only redeemable qualities of the movies.

I've never seen someone fail to make sense of penguindrum. The symbolism is basic as fuck, especially if youve seen or read galactic railaroad and were alive in 1995
Gits Innocence.

I still mostly enjoyed it though

It's a tie between this (Second Season only) and GitS2 Innocence.
>>153182939
I thought some of it was sad, especially the fat guy's story.
But yeah I agree with you.
>>153182960
This is actually a pretty good definition for pretentious.
I won't even lie, I'm impressed.
