He did of course, he became their friend. It was pretty hard for him to make friends in the first place and they showed him that he can trust them by reassuring that they understand why he runs away in episode 4. In response to which he breaks down in front of them and cries, revealing his feelings about what he does. Later on he openly discusses Misato with them etc. Kaworu was written specifically for Shinji, he's a special case, of course. The series is about people who want to connect to each other but struggle to do so, its about them, not about Kaworu. Kaworu was there for Shinji to learn to love himself and be able to love others. He was what Shinji idealized in his mind. A person who will help him and love him. But by revealing that Kaworu isn't human and by killing him off we see that such an ideal person as him (from Shinji's point of view) can't exist. The series is about learning to love yourself and others in a society of flawed people who will hurt each other. That's what Shinji learns, and that's what you must learn and accept. That you can open up to people. They can hurt you and but otherwise you'll feel lonely. And Shinji learns about that.

Kaworu hurts Shinji as well, just like everyone else hurts him.

Kaworu is an ideal to Shinji, but learning to understand those different from you is part of Eva's story. So naturally an angel learning to understand a human goes with that as well.
