So far as I can tell the official translation's phrasing is less laconic, in exchange for reading more smoothly. Brevity is the soul of wit so whether or not it's a good thing is up for debate.

Low Mana

Early in the series Kazuma himself states that learning even Intermediate Magic would be a waste for him because he lacks the mana to cast it.

Advanced Magic (the most powerful spells and useful spells) are well out of his league.

Keep in mind, this is a person who's entire reserve of mana can be depleted by casting Beginner level spells. The type of spells and decent mage could cast pretty much infinitely because they would recover mana faster than they were expending it.

Kazuma's stats are all mediocre and his magic stat seems to actually be his weakest. The only exceptions to this are his Intelligence (which is SLIGHTLY above average, think 110 IQ compared to the regular 100) and his Luck which is absurdly high (he literally out-lucks the Goddess of Fortune Eris when she's in her human form).

His physical stats are lower than Megumin's, Kazuma is literally weaker, slower and has less physical endurance than a 14 year old girl who's also a mage (meaning she has high magic and mental stats but comparably low physical stats).

Kazuma's options are extremely limited when it comes to what skills he can use effectively.

Drakness is the perfect tank and is the only reason that Kazuma's team can fight large groups of enemies or powerful enemies without taking huge casualties. This doesn't really come through much in the anime but it's still true.

She would still be more useful if she invested some skill points in improving her swordsmanship and got to a point where she can actually hit things though. As will become apparent when Vanir shows up, if she could learn to hit stuff she would be a seriously formidable warrior.

Against bosses sure, same routine every time. The problem with the group is when it faces multiple opponents who cannot all by killed be the explosion or its shock wave. Their other problem is focusing too much on magic and not enough on physical side. Even to this day kazuma has never used his sword, he swung it once and it was stopped by sylvia, when he was fighting with iris against the knights he could do only the same thing he did to mitsurugi. They simply lack variety when facing opponents, and so far it has worked because it is convenient for the story to do so.

Yeah Kazuma's team is basically perfect for fighting bosses and singular beefy opponents but useless for everything else. Which is why Yunyun was so essential in volume 9 to teleport them out of harms way after Megumin unleashed her load. The kingdom should capitalize on this and use them as a tactical nuke when they need them.

I know this is unrelated to anything but in all seriousness he would be far better off in close combat using a broadsword or something even shorter and using a small round buckler to parry attacks.

I mean I get that it's because the author is a jap but a Katana is a terrible weapon for someone as weak and vulnerable to attack as Kazuma. It's a two-handed blade that requires a lot of training to use effectively (more so than a dual-edged sword because you have to learn the technique for blocking, parrying and attacking, whereas with small shield and a short dual edge blade simple slashes and stabs and how to anticipate attacks to block with the shield is all you would need to learn to be somewhat proficient). It's also heavier and slower than a short blade, which doesn't suit Kazuma's fighting style, which relies heavily on distraction and tricks to slip in quick attacks while the enemy is off guard.

I fucking hate how Light Novel authors always have to give their characters a fucking Katana even when it doesn't suit them at all just because "Grorious nippon steel forded 1 thousand times!".

My thoughts on the series

I started being interested in the series very recently, by watching the anime after seeing it posted here a couple of times, i didnt expect much but the world drew me in instantly.
After discovering it started with a light novel i read through them and enjoyed them very much, characters are colorful, interactions are funny and the story is interesting, Even the spinoffs were well done especially the vanir one. its only shame there isn't more of the material yet. Props to the authors.

So thanks /a/ konosuba enthusiasts for the introduction.
