The issue is, and other characters agree, is that Araragi was flat out being as purposefully oblivious because of his issues and idolatry.

The Tsubasa Cat commentaries pointed out that he was being absolutely retarded. While it's true that Hanekawa's issue was not flat out saying she loved him, after all they went through, Araragi would be terminally retarded to think he meant nothing to her, or that she would do the same for anyone. The advice she gives him points out that she herself thinks that for that you shouldn't give affection on that level to just anyone.

I don't know, I think he serves as a good example as to what happens when you don't/can't let go of things. Some people turn to alcohol, drugs, in his case it's money, to deal with this. That's where the mistake lies. People try hard to drown the problem out with all those distractions instead of working on gradually moving on. I think that's also why they show Kaiki interacting a lot with kids/the main cast, because he's just as childish and flawed as them when it comes to that. Disliking him is definitely fine though, he wasn't meant to be a pure character with no flaws to be loved completely just like some of the other characters (Snake is a big example of this).
