Bakemonogatari was written first. Araragi was already decided to go out with Hitagi before Kizu was written. After that the author had to justify it and the excuses were always pretty stupid. Basically there are two different excuses used at different parts of the story:
1.He was only sexually attracted to her but not emotionally
2.He sees her as too good for him
