If I like Rei, does it mean that I'm a man-child?

>Anno understands the Japanese national attraction to characters like Rei as the product of a stunted imaginative landscape born of Japan’s defeat in the Second World War. “Japan lost the war to the Americans,” he explains, seeming interested in his own words for the first time during our interview. “Since that time, the education we received is not one that creates adults. Even for us, people in their 40s, and for the generation older than me, in their 50s and 60s, there’s no reasonable model of what an adult should be like.” The theory that Japan’s defeat stripped the country of its independence and led to the creation of a nation of permanent children, weaklings forced to live under the protection of the American Big Daddy, is widely shared by artists and intellectuals in Japan. It is also a staple of popular cartoons, many of which feature a well-meaning government that turns out to be a facade concealing sinister and more powerful forces.

No it means you have good taste and that Anno is dumb when it comes to taste in women. And women in general, haha!

No, it means you have taste. If you ever wonder who the manchild is, look no further than the man attacking millions of people because they didn't pick his favorite character.

>Anno wants to make Rei creepy and disturbing
>Japanese men have a ingrained, long-standing cultural preference for demure, young, virginal and submissive women
>Anno gives her all these traits as well as a pretty face and an overdeveloped body for someone her age
>Everyone goes ga-ga on account of Anno's social ignorance and personal weakness for tiddies
>"IT'S ALL YOUR FAULT, YOU FILTHY OTAKU SCUM! LEAVE ME ALONE! WAAAAHHHH!"
>>
Everything he said in the quote you posted is 100% correct. If you can actually read and comprehend, unlike the rest of the board, you'll see that he included himself in this comparison. Clearly he's not happy with his own existence and sees it as the future image of the people that are now growing up. The difference is that this isn't a Japanese only thing, all over the world young people lack mature male guidance that leads them to adulthood. It's a generational issue.
Obviously anno is a bitter old cunt, that's not unusual though. He has just given up after not seeing any change.

There wasn't any hidden message or interpretation here but okay.

>>Anno wants to make Rei creepy and disturbing

No he didn't. He made her interesting and easy to sympathize with. The he came up with bullshit afterwards.

>>152870719
That is obviously not true - if you can actually read and comprehend his rhetoric, the use of himself is purely to strengthen his message, and he excludes himself implicitly by making it a fact that he doesn't like Rei himself. Then let's drop the rose colored glasses, the "adults" two or three generations of Anno had the exact same type of neoteny in their personalities. This was noted by Douglas MacArthur, who refered to the Japanese who had grown up in the 1800's / early 1900's to act like "children".
>>
>>152870858
You're reading too deep into it, baka
>>
>>152870865
Rei isn't relevant, I'm talking about the quote. He included himself due to self loathing, it's even more simple than adding 1 and 1 together.
McArthur was a mad cunt that loved himself more than anything in the world, he's the last dude I'd listen to. He's also from a completely different culture.

>>152870951
Bury this argument. He literally says it so once again, there is nothing deep or hidden here.

>Rei isn't relevant, I'm talking about the quote. He included himself due to self loathing, it's even more simple than adding 1 and 1 together.

Rei and Anno is practically the only thing relevant here. His entire tirade exists to explains what he calls the national attraction to characters like Rei. Japan prior to the American intervention was far more childish, brutal and uncivilized than anything ever seen after, with slaves, a caste system and an extreme form of childishness they thought was "honor".

Anno does not include himself at all. He does not call himself childish. He says "we" at best, which would be the same thing as an American saying that "we" as a nation have failed in "our" economy, or any other venture be it industry or a form of personality. This is a common form of rhetoric used when you want to feign legitimacy and humility. When you want to manipulate rather than show understanding or honesty.

Anyone who reads this and knows Anno, who knows Evangelion, knows that he has personally attested to the fact that he doesn't have any care in the world for Rei, and prefers Asuka as his favorite. Therefore he is not a product of this so called "Japan" with a stunted imaginative landscape. He's placing himself above it.

Rather, see >>152869621

I think that connecting waifu choices in nineties' cartoons to the Second World War is a pretty impressive leap of logic.
>>
>>152871487
Anno is a butthurt Asuka fan who is upset Japan didn't like his waifu as much as Rei. He isn't using anything remotely close to logic here, he's just angry at the world, and then lashes out at it like the manchild he is.
>>
never listen to the artist. only listen to the work itself.
>>
>>152871365
Well I suppose it is a Rei thread but I was mainly concerned with the quote at hand and I don't connect it with Rei because you don't have to in order to argue about the legitimacy of what he says in general.

I don't know what American intervention you're talking about, the opening of Japan and the end of isolationism? Well of course they were completely different, Japan was not westernised back then. This didn't just come from America though, the Meiji restoration was one of British/French/German ideals.
I don't know what "far more childish" and "extreme form of childishness they thought was honour" are even supposed to refer to, let alone mean in this context.

Yeah sure he includes himself in the quote, a product of the times he lives in even.
I don't know where you taken this idea from that "we" can't be specifically used for a nation's peoples but it is certainly interesting how you add some sort of manipulative scheme to it.

Yeah you might be right in saying he's placing himself above it, but there isn't any issue in doing so if you see something that disgusts or saddens you and understand why it does. I didn't say he wasn't a hypocrite, in fact I specifically wrote he's a bitter old cunt. I'm fairly sure he's just as pissed at himself as he's at the people that, in his eyes, fail to understand. Once again, I'm not saying he isn't a cunt but what he said in the quote is generally true for most of the developed nations young people. We wouldn't be on this fucking board if it wasn't.
>>
>>152871633
This.
>>
>>152871633
You're absolutely correct but this doesn't mean you can't argue about a quote from an artist if it is a topic of general importance and can be stripped of the connections of any of the artist's works.

>>> the madly obsessive—and immensely profitable—otaku subculture embraced by tens of thousands of geeky fans who spend their lives unraveling the larger message of the show and collecting pornographic comic books featuring the show’s female characters
>>
>>152872092
It's much, much simpler. You see people attacking each other constantly over their choice of favorite character - this is an otaku, a fanboy phenomenon, just as observable in Europe with football teams and allegiances. People who like Manchester United are "bandwagoning idiots", and people who like Stoke City want to be "special snowflakes".

Anno's attack on Japan is entirely motivated by this. Simple as. You can't simply ignore what he says.
