It was official AOTY on /a/ and a lot of people liked it but not everyone did, the yuri and the character focused ending and the art style all didn't go well withe some people and those who didn't get it have become very vocal against it.


I personally loved it, a few things could have been done better, towards the end it didn't feel as on point as it did before, and modifying the earlier parts to more properly prepare the show for the final arc's elements would have improved the overall experience, I think. Still a fantastic show despite minor pacing criticism.

A sort of dimension or layer of reality that exists in parallel but separate to theirs, one that is influenced and connected to people, their hearts, their minds, and their relationships.
A sort of collective unconscious manifested as a fantasy land.

Sadly never explained as far as I'm aware, not even by the author afterwards.
Was she an elder god, an extra dimensional being, some creature of chaos, and eldritch monster or just a psychic, no clue.

>Why Mimi's personality changes

You remember she was pregnant with Cocona, so she tried to run away. They caught her and they took away Cocona and they were acting really creepy and scary, like they would hurt her.
She fell into pure illusion on her own and ended "switching" with herself. The switch is a mechanic that was introduced in the show with Iroha's episode, and is also what happened to Salt's dad. It seems to be related to a person's way of seeing things, people can go from having repressed traumas and issues to more emotionally at peace, or they can also switch in more horrible ways like Salt's dad who when all insane.
In Mimi's case it seems the show was used a lot of themes from jungian psychology which touches subjects inspired by some folk tale elements, so Mimi changed from manifesting aspects of a nice nurturing mother to showing more possessive obsessive and dangerous aspects according to the way those theories work. Someone else who is more familiar with that part might be able to explain it better.

In the end it seems like pure illusion didn't actually change reality itself, but it changed the way people live about it, which does in a more indirect way also change reality for them because now they will behave in a different way.
In the case of Iroha her inner traumas were given some relief and so she was able to change.

Papika got her memories back when all the shards were collected. The feeling I got was that when Mimi shattered into fragments she destroyed Papikas identity/memories as well and reforming one did the same for the other.

Salt's dad probably looks at Papika / Cocona as guides that can lead his agents to the shards of Mimi. They put some kind of tracker on Cocona. Papika probably either already had one or only one was needed. Perhaps Saltdad knew Salt wouldn't want to perform surgery on his own daughter to remove the tracker or would be less likely to search her for it than he would Papika. Saltdad knows he needs both parts for direct drive but he only needs to track one of them. Cocona may have a stronger attachment to PI as Mimi's daughter.

Papika entered by following Mimi physically into PI after her switch with her shadow self caused a tear into PI from the real world. Inside of the dicktree was "lost in PI" her age was apparently constantly in flux.

It had an amazing first half, before everything went tumbling down tumbling down.

If it kept up the quality of the first 6 episodes, it would've been my AOTY. After things went as they did (especially episodes 11 and 12), it was pretty much the Wasted Potential of the Year.
