Was Sasuke a good character?

He was written with the wrong gender. He'd be GOAT if he was female and the dynamic between him and Naruto was feel very different.

Just a bad try of a cool and edgy character.

I've just now started watching Naruto, and am currently at the part where Naruto, Sasuke and Sakura take part in the Chuunin exam. So far Sasuke has seemed pretty cool, and actually likable in a way. Not really edgy or anything. From what I understand that's going to change later on, but so far he's been okay.

Nah, far from it. He's inconsistent, make decisions that make no sense for plot convenience, married a girl he hated and proceeded to ditch her and the kid both for 12 years despite suffering of his father's lack of interest in him as a kid, etc.
He was quite charismatic though. Kishimoto is probably right to think he was his best character design.

The reason everyone shits on Naruto so much isn't because it's bad. Sure we're on /a/ so it's hated because it's popular, but not just that. Actually, it's also hated because it used to be good. It had much promise, and Kishimoto shat the bed hard. The ones who hate Naruto the most are usually the same ones who used to be rather invested in its earlier parts.

Unfortunately, he achieved his goals at a time where Naruto was too popular to end, so Kishimoto kept ended up turning him into an enormous douche in an attempt to keep him and Naruto opposed until they could fight at the end of the series. What ultimately kills Sasuke's entire character is how unsympathetic he and the Uchiha are as characters, its to the point where you're actually siding with the guy who wants to kill them all then the main characteter. Seriously all Kishi had to do was not bring back Itachi in Part I and Sasuke would have learned the importance of friendship and all that gay shit so he wouldn't have been such a clusterfuck. Its like Kishi forgot what made Hiei such a cool character despite his edginess and chunni tendencies (The darkness black flame) that you understood why he acted the way he did, you give him a sympathetic goal (protecting his sister) and you mellow him out so he becomes a cool dude.

If you look at it from the brokeback mountain perspective, he probably had to get out of town to allow Naruto to grow. He probably married Sakura out of obligation, too. Considering Naruto probably never lost his obsession or possessiveness with Sasuke even after getting him back, Naruto would likely be suffocating him with his needy affection and codependency. And If you think about it, at their age he was wanting to use Sasuke as side friend with benefits while getting with Hinata, too. I mean, it seemed he loved Sasuke a lot more than just friends or rivals. He cares about Hinata, too, but it was always a different level when it came to Sasuke, even in the end.
