When people go "oh yeah, that's like in that other anime".
For HnK that's usually a change of the art style, or a depiction of scars. Sometimes it's also a presentation of a post-nuclear wasteland, but with those you have to be careful not to confuse them with MadMax references. As far as combat techniques are concerned, it would be the "you're already dead" types. Passing each other by in an attack and seeing the victor remain standing afterwards is way too common to be associated with HnK.

Akira, Ashita no Joe and HnK are very present too.

I think there is a point to be made about the nature of the references though. While most of the references are just about recreating scenes or art styles (or just hiding a character in a crowd), there are a few that are more context sensitive. I can't think of a very good example right now though.
