It didn't. In fact the pacing and editing was very similar to that of jDramas, lots of scene cuts and mood swings. I'd call it a very basic directorial production.

Kyoani staff put more effort into depicting water than the YoI staff did with ice-skating

I'm a fujo, but i didn't like any of them too much. I guess i'll choose YoI, because it's the series i was able to finish. I rated YoI 6/10, i liked the characters, music and choreographies (even if the animation was wonky), had fun watching it, but i wasn't convinced by the relationships and plot.

Only patricians realize both are shit but Free did it better in developing bonds because it was 100% SoL, while Yoi tried to be both SoL and sports yet couldn't really handle either. Both are ultimately subpar though.

Free was more consistent and felt better put together all around.

YoI had some really great things and ideas here and there but it felt like a huge clusterfuck overall and the animation was laughable.

I think Free! wasn't supposed to be a really deep show, so it's not fair to compare in that way, but I will say that YoI felt like it attempted to be deep at times but was ultimately pretty shallow storywise. People are fooled by the camerawork and lighting/music in some scenes that they think it's a masterpiece but when you look at the dialogue and depth of the story there's usually not much to be found.

I think that because of the great ideas YoI had and the things it attempted it gets way overhyped when as I've said, it was kind of a mess all around.

YoI had better ideas but poor execution. Free! was more consistent in terms of animation quality and coherency of writing.

Free was recommended to me after YOI, I tried to like it, even ended up watching to the end, yet couldn't find any positive aspect, well maybe except for animation. The storyline was weak, drama forced, characters retarded or annoying or both. MC was an autist and not in a good way like yoi's mc and his best friend was one of the worst character I've ever seen.
Is season 2 any better? I don't want to waste my time again

Between YoI and Free, I can't really pick without a bias. I liked both, but I can't really tell if I enjoyed them for what they are or if my enjoyment was in-part derived from the threads on /a/ about them. Probably have to give the win to Free just because of Miracle of the Universe Makoto; the only YoI character that could rival him is Phichit, and he got fucked over.

Yoi was not as pretty but it kept me wanting to see what happened next episode.
