Turn A is actually outstanding, barring a few awkward scenes here and there. It's about people trying to stop conflict from happening and the characters, setting, mech animation and general atmosphere of the show are refreshing and beautiful. It does drag on in a couple episodes but I generally enjoyed its pace and build up to the final episodes. It has a ton of charm but it's not for everyone I suppose.

I liked how the bad guys were a bunch of massive gundam nerds who had done nothing their whole lives but watch gundam like this guy >>152684243 The whole series was designed to piss gundam fans off. It introduced strange designs that people wouldn't like so toys don't sell. The focus is away from the war and the action to piss off the war fetishists. It tried to end all the power levels arguments by making the Turns stupidly powerful and finally it tried to end the pointless cycle of gundam series that all have the same plot and put the franchise to rest.

Basically the Japanese government reinterpreted the anti-war clause to potentially allow their self-defense forces to be used to support allies in collective self-defensive actions. Sounds good in theory but "self-defense" could well be interpreted to mean that Japanese troops could be sent to the Middle East in defense of their ally the United States. More leftist elements in Japan essentially accused the lawmakers of outright trying to violate the article and illegally remilitarize. This happened the same year that G-Reco was made.

In G-Reco, Capital Guard, who only exist to defend the space elevator, are the good guys, while the Capital Army, who are falsely claiming to be innocently taking a more active stance to defend the elevator while secretly violating ancient taboos against militarization and preparing to actively wage war against the rest of the world are the villains. While Tomino has always been anti-militarist, it's still surprising to see him tackle a contemporary political issue without giving a damn if people are offended. Most otaku in Japan tend to skew politically conservative, so he really doesn't care if he offends his fanbase either.
