Because anime are usually done by committees that fund the thing, studios usually offer a bid so the cheapest one usually gets picked ... there are exceptions, KEY for example decided to go with J.C. Staff instead of KyoAni with Little Busters.

Its not as they can choose, part of why they tried their LN brand was so they could pick from something they owned instead of having to bid but I dont think that worked too well.

Hibike was one of those special cases, most shows that are flopping now after the third episode, don't recover. Hibike saw an increase after episode 5 and then in episode 8, which were incredibly good episodes. Maidragon manga doesn't have something on par with that. Not for late night anime, specially late night anime with little merch like this one. Disc sales still matter and in some cases are the most important factor in a late night anime success. Other shows can still rely on partnerships, manga/LN sales or merch.

Kind of. Different parts of the committee own rights to different things and often profit from different streams of revenue. Being the head of a committee means you funded and own the most of a show. So flops hit harder when you're at the top than the bottom. (Often studios aren't on it at all, and just get a contract fee).

They fund part of the series. Sometimes they're in charge of something specific, like merch, marketing, international streaming, music CDs and events. Animation studios that are in the committee usually means that they paid the production costs from their own pockets and will gain profit from BD sales. In KyoAni's case, they also do their own merch, Light novels, and BDs and sell it through their store.

When an animation studio isn't on the committee it means that they're just contractors and were paid a static fee, they don't see any more profit beyond that.
