I have never been a fan of Instant Madness Powerup Gohan, and I don't care about his powerlevel, but it would be nice to see him being relevant to the plot in his own manner.

He was powerful in Trunks' future, even with that he never had a chance to win in that situation, he lost but he was a cool character and mentor figure and the way he handled that situation is something not other Gohan has been able to emule.

He could at least take Piccolo's old job of being the one who holds the situation (through dialogue or tricks if necessary), the level headed one, but he's even denied that.

only downside is that he was always potraid as super powerfull, but never managed to do something relevant except for cell.

Piccolo is a father figure to Gohan because kids develop a theory of mind at about 5 years old, and that's when they start forming impactful social relationships. Goku, Gohan and Piccolo trained for three years to prepare for the Androids, and so in that sense they both raised him, presumably with Piccolo continuing to do so after Goku died for the second time.

What pisses me off is how Gohan was made into a doormat scholar. Yes, that brief three chapter crossover is totally representative of all 200 chapters of the classic Dragon Ball.
Let's ignore the three tournament arcs and the rest of the Red Ribbon storyline. Or how the Piccolo storyline is the darkest saga next to the Android saga and spans a third of the series.

Dragon Ball is more fantastical and humor oriented than what it became later on but it was always a gradual transition. Describing it as "Dr. Slump mixed with Journey of the West" is outright wrong unless you're only discussing the first volume.

No, Black boost are zenkais. The Saiyan blood within him rages to this day, pushing him to fight. He made the Great Saiyaman persona so he could get that sense of excitement from fighting without feeling like he's betraying himself.

It's even readdressed in the latest episode. He's incredibly excited when he realizes he can fight Goku as Saiyaman. He's incredibly into it and happy when the fight starts, just like Goku.

Gohan wants to be a scholar - that's his human side. Gohan also wants to fight and kill - that's his saiyan side. One is accepted wildly here while the other is wildly denied, despite both being true.

It's the exact same for Trunks. He -enjoyed- destroying Frieza and Cold.

One of the only good and consistent character progression of DBZ. Not everyone has to fight constantly, him giving it up to be a family man and scholar is much more interesting.
Of course, it fits rather strangely in the Shonen and I understand, but it's still a nice take on it.
Krillin has a similar progression, but he gave up fighting as well cuz he couldn't keep up (whereas Gohan simply didn't want to). Both have given it up for their families as well, however.

It's not bad, it just sucks that most characters don't have a lot of variety within their paths and that makes it look repetitive and shitty, and boring. Super has two people that matter, with only one being actually important. That is the main flaw here (and has been for a long time).
