A few reasons. The main one being that it got insanely popular. More people means more discussion which leads to controversy.

Another reason is the "I love Emilia" moment which caused shipping wars close to what Eva caused.

Another reason is because it's an isekai. Isekai have been having a bit of a strange reputation around the anime community. To many people the genre itself is a reminder to the travesty that was SAO. There's also the fact that since SAO, many isekai anime were introduced and almost all of them gain SOME decent level of popularity, so Re:Zero basically jumped into the big leagues from the get-go.

Putting people who were already reading the WN/LN aside (although this includes some of them), in context of the events of the anime it's just:

1. "remfags" being blinded by her more and their own perception of her that they not only ignore the possible effects of Rem's actions towards Subaru, but they also step ALL OVER what Rem was really trying to do for the person that touched her heart despite it all (both what she knew she did and what she didn't) during that confession. It was far more than asking for Subaru's hand in a sense that was going on.

2. "emiliafags" being equally shallow and arguably doing worse by being baited by "remfags".

I think Subaru's a shitheel, but he's an unusual choice for a protagonist. Generally, you get either Kirito or the faggots from Valvrave, Accel World or Guilty Crown, with very little variation in between.

The suspense is still very much there, because usually by the third or fourth loop, you're praying to God that Honda doesn't die again and set the plot back another episode or two. I'd almost go as far as calling Re: Zero a horror show.
We also don't know what the consequences of resetting are yet.
