What do you think about anime/manga set during historic periods?

I love them, but I sort of hate it when things are a bit too "clean." Like, if you're going to have a historic setting, might as well forget all about toilets and running water and just admit people used chamber pots or just dumping shit around.

Can be pretty great.

Depends on the execution of the show, but historical settings I can be cool. I'm a big fan of Wind Rises and Grave of the Fireflies. Miss Hokusai was a recent good one.

There needs to be more of them.

I noticed a lot of them are quite sad, but maybe because those are the most interesting parts of history.
good stuff
I do have to say this Anne Frank movie was very good.

Been meaning to watch this. Don't know too much about it, but I think it might be good.

Rintaro AND Toshio Hirata both worked on it, it's definitely worth watching. It's heavy stuff, but I mean that's expected.

How was the animation? I recognize a bunch of the KA names, but it doesn't seem to have the heavyweight realist animators from that era.

>literally madhouse with a movie budget in the 90s
It's not really the kind of movie to show off flashy/experimental sakuga or anything, but I think it's quite fluid.

Oh sure, but you can look at stuff like Junkers or Whisper of the Heart from the same era and they're stunning examples of what good character animation can bring to the table even without big, flashy set pieces to show it off. That's the kinda thing I'm interested in, hoping Anne delivers.

I think I learned more about the french revolution through RoV than I did in high school.
>>152616385
I think they're pretty good. But most of them stay in Japan.
