Well one, yes I think animation a huge part of enjoying anime. and 2. its the 3rd episode with an established history and its doing what is essentially a flash back. We know where the characters will end up. I get that it might have locked itself in character wise at least until the mid way point but its 25 episodes long. I Made my point about the shift. the movies take place during a part of the school year that happens after these first few episodes so thats why character growth can seem slow.

Also it seems like most anime these days follow the 3 episode rule and try to make their first 3 episodes stand out. I find episode 3 seems to be a climax moment in a lot of recent series. So it might just be trigger going all out with the budget they have for the first 3 episodes and then as the series opens up there'll be more room for growth.

So far I don't mind it. Only Diana feels like she can do no wrong,and she still almost murdered all the butterflies.

The first episode and the first movie aren't really that similar in terms of writing. A big part of the first episode is the Rod choosing Akko, which we still don't exactly know the specifics of yet, and Akko's trouble in the Forbidden Forest; neither were part of the plot of the first movie. I'm also pretty sure that the first movie didn't have anything to do with Akko meeting Lotte and Sucy: they just started out as friends there. I could be wrong about that last bit, though, because it's been a while.
