Soldier man is Jesus, the girl's egg represents faith, which has to be put to test (broken) to see it truly blossom. Thus, after having her egg broken, the girl's faith flourishes in many eggs, and she is saved as a part of the Godhead. This all mimics Mamoru Oshii's loss of faith in christianity, since he wanted to enter a seminar.

They wanted to make an aesthetically beautiful movie before anything else. So even if you don't get the full story it should still be an enjoyable in my opinion.

I suppose from an artistic/animation standpoint, yes, it was enjoyable, albeit a handful of scenes, I thought, were a bit too drawn out. If anything, I definitely think the film did an excellent job of creating a memorable atmosphere.

I don't know if it's the "right" interpretation but I think that's an acceptable one. Anyway, I doubt Oshii ever gave a textbook explanation of what the movie means, so it's up to the viewer to interpret it.

Maybe reading the book would help to understand it better but I haven't done that.

The book was written before the movie was made but both ended up being released at the same time.
I doubt a translation exists but if you can read it's probably an interesting read.
