The author was a player too, that's why the "powers" are all based on real table tennis technique and not just lesbian magic, but their target demographic is obviously more than just bing bongers, the appeal of the show is pretty wide if you ask me. It's hard to pin it down as anything less broad than "sports shounen".

The anime is actually pretty faithful to the game compared to most sports anime. It has a bunch of explanations of how different rackets, strokes and playing styles work and the characters all play with strategies centered around real aspects of the game. What else do you want? See 20 consecutive minutes of them doing nothing but pinging and ponging the ball back and forth? If I want to watch real ping pong I'll watch real ping pong.

The show pretty much made me interested in actual ping pong, currently learning how to play with a friend.

Pretty much an opposite effect to Ping Pong the Animation, which made me think this game really isn't for me.

I do enjoy Saki (achiga-hen not as much) but I enjoyed shakunetsu better.

I do agree they are different though, shakunetsu matches are more hotblooded and shounen battle-like with the winner yelling his way into victory and the loser growing through defeat, while in Saki they are more focused on the abilities themselves and how they clash with each other with twists and traps until there is a winner.
