Family guy is about the pathetic intends of a family guy surrounded by a family full of losers. Gintama is about a group of misfits bonding. If you want to compare Family guy with a japanese animation, then try Shin-chan, but Shin-chan is actually good.

Samon still hasn't crossed the line of serious arc. It just had some scenes mostly related to the cat under the rain. I don't know if the author is going to pick a serious arc, and seeing how Gintama's rank has been doing, maybe he is going to refrain for a while.
