What there's to tell? The game ran for 11 months, they wanted an advertisement anime, then the game was discontinued recently. But they had already contracted a studio.
Here's what I think happened. There were several options for the studio. If they give up the timeslot they probably won't get back all the money they paid for it. Also they have a contract to actually make anime and get money for it. I assume the company that contracted them can't just one-sidedly cancel it and has to at least put in some money. So with those money they will end up with some profit rather than just choosing to just not do it and taking the loss. And I guess the contractor probably can give them money to cover their loses and terminate the contract. But that will be less than actually finishing the show. So the studio just gonna scum it out, make the show as cheaply as possibly to get their money while possibly pocketing some of it.

In the game, it was mentioned that the Control Center took care of their food, although the only one directly mentioned (over and over...) was Japari Manju/Japamanju.

Although in the game it was also mentioned that after becoming Animal Girls many of them enjoyed civilization, like Serval says that she likes watching tv, playing videogames and other stuff, while in the anime they portray them as still living in the wilderness.

The show is kind of set up as a semi-prequel to the game, since "Kaban" is heavily implied to be a younger version of the game's Park Guide (same VA, feather hat).

It's not strongly tied to that though, since it also contradicts a bunch of stuff just in these first two episodes, like how the Park Guide in the game was around since the Sand Star fell for the first time and talks about how happy she was to be able to finally talk with the animals she always saw around - and Serval is supposed to be younger than the Park Guide.

Either way, due to that set up, I doubt they ever planned to deal with the enemies much here.

I hope they feature the 4 guardians though, especially Byakko, but considering how they need to be defeated before becoming Animal Girls I guess they might be skipped.

I think you're wrong, kemono doesn't mean "anime furry" outside of maybe the english-speaking furry fandom. Kemonomimi just means "animal ears", you don't use the term to designate a character, but you can say "kemonomimi musume" for example.

Anyway, the term is used here for its original meaning which is "wild animals". As you can see there is no cats or dogs in sight in Kemono Friends.

Based on the game,

They're aliens that fell to Earth alongside the Sand Star that turned the animals from Japari Park into Animal Girls. They do absorb and copy beings around them though, so some of them start showing human characteristics.

Don't know if it'll come up in the show since it's kind of a prequel, and that's a big reveal in the game's main story. There's also a Cerulian Serval that's tied to that reveal, and she doesn't seem to be in the anime.

It was obviously gonna be a higher budget thing made by a more established studio. We probably would've gotten a lot of fanservice to justify the late night timeslot.

Just judging by the feel of these first couple of episodes, I think that they took a script they already had done and shopped it around. They likely had all the zoo interviews done too, maybe for the mobage.

In a way its really endearing, having this tiny MMD studio trying to bring this show to life while having next to no budget or resources. It's pretty obvious that they are tackling a screenplay that's beyond their means, but they are still going for it. There's a lot of little things that make me feel like the people making this are trying to do the best they can given the complete lack of corporate fucks given.

I actually like this show. The character designs are very cute and the simple language makes it perfect for learning beginner's Japanese.

Yes, the show has its weaknesses, quite a lot of them, but it's still way better than trash like nazi loli sarariman, fatass beta strikes back or eye cancer - the anime.

Going with SD designs for the main art, not just the battle sprites likely limited the appeal.

But I think the gameplay did hurt this. Long real time battles means that people actually need to pay attention rather than just play leisurely goes completely against the spirit of these games. The characters automatically did standard attacks, but there was tons of micromanagement like healing, special attacks, combo attacks and an odd in-battle level up function (separate from the overall character level) which had to be used quite often.

Not to mention the show is pretty well written so far. I'm getting the same vibes I got from FlipFlappers's early episodes. That subtlety, that sense of wonder, it's all so deeply fascinating!

Judging by the language and the content the show is aimed mainly at an age group between 4 and 10. Edutainment for the kids. Why is it running in an 1 a.m. time slot?
