That's just one of the fanons. There are others: The Schumann Resonance is Gaia's alpha rhythm, and Protocol Seven (i.e. IPv7) was designed to resonate with it and control it and so control the whole planet. Lain of the Wired is an avatar (or more correctly, an emanation) of Gaia, incarnated and placed in an artificial family to stop this from happening. It draws a lot on the stories of Jesus (as being the incarnation of another god), and has a lot of Christianity references in it, but that's only like Eva, it's used because it's cool and foreign.
