I finished the original TV series (though with the redone 21, 22, 23, and 24) as well as EoE for the first time a few days ago

I really didn't think the original ending was that out there. The jump from normal reality to instrumentality is a bit sudden but not jarringly so, and the actual CONGRATULATIONS scene flowed completely naturally from an the stuff before it, though I think the transtion from "Shinji being a fucking loser and not getting it" to "Oh wait I fixed my depression lol" is also a little sudden.

The show had a bunch of psychological interrogation scenes across it's enritity so I don't know why people would have thought it being the case for the ending would be that unexpected.

As far as EoE, it obviously provided a lot more context as for how the instrumentality was exeucted which I enjoy and there's a lot of cool imagry and all that but I feel like the actual post instrumentality internal look at shinji's head is handled worse and is harder to follow, though that could just be because I didn't realize most of that dialog was supposed to be currently happening inside the instrumentality rather then flashbacks to events that we hadn't seen before.

The last episode was comparatively more abstract piece to compensate for the team's residual funds with minimal animation.

It was confusing and not very dynamic or satisfying, even to people who understood it. A lot of people weren't happy with "Congratulations" or how little was actually explained by the TV ending.

If I was in the car or walking around I wouldnt just put 'fly me to the moon' so its not a good song for that. But in the context of the show, it was the perfect song for me and is amazing. How many shows have tried to copy that feeling you get when some crazy shit goes down but then you end on 'fly me to the moon.' A lot, but the off the top of my head the one that comes to mind is parasyte.

The parasyte ED is probably an objectively more enjoyable song to listen to, but it just didn't fit with the show because its not as simple as putting a calm song after a violent scene. My point is, the song is god tier because of the anime for me. There arent a ton of songs that can bring me to a specific mood or feeling of goosebumps like Cruel Angels Thesis and Fly Me to the Moon do. 10 years from now if I randomly hear that rendition of fly me to the moon, ill still get a flood of emotions and nostalgia that feels like a drug or something.

It's almost impossible not to care about the details that Eva never reveals because it builds them up so well. You really want to know more but unfortunatly the only way of finding out is through fuck loads of online research.
