Pretty sure the Piano scene with Kaworu saying "Repeat it over and over again until it sounds nice." was a hint that they're stuck in a time loop and Shinji is going to keep repeating things until he's satisfied.
If it really is a time loop, I'm done with evangelion.
Time loops are fucking shit and time shenanigans in general always mark the end of any consistent plot.
