Have an actual plot again and focus on core characters. Season 1 was pretty interesting. Season 2 started bogging down, but I kind of figured they were just world building so let it slide. By the end of season 2 and into season 3 there was massive cast bloat where a lot of the characters became superficial at best and it was practically monster of the weak.

Dog Days" has gotten to the point where the cast is just too large, and trying to give everyone screen time makes it so that you can't really focus on a good engaging story that binds everything together anymore.
Although it was still somewhat nice, and the setting really is awesome. I just wish the wargames weren't about beamspams anymore.

And then you have the opposite in form of Utawarerumono False Faces, which has a good story and should be easily adapted, but the director thought it better to make the story really boring for most of its 25 episode run.
