What was your adolescent defining anime?

Pic related for me, it actually changed my life.

Probably Digimon Tamers. It was my first non-rewatched, post-tv anime, and I saw it in high school. During that tine, I took part in an online chuuni Digimon believers community, and Digimon Tamers was just so unlike other anime I had seen, and the worldbuilding actually worked in a way that made it easier to convince oneself it was actually real, and the digital world actually existed, and not just a cartoon.
This was before I really got into anime, didn't truly start until I was 19. But was interested in Digimon in high school.

So you are trying to say that you believed that Digimon were real when you were in high school?

Beck was pretty fucking dank back in the glory days. Now it's kinda shit.

desu if any film/show/book/song/art piece/etc have an actual impact on your life you're probably a bit of a sperg.
>>
The only anime on TV in 1990 was samurai pizza cats. Maybe "Saber rider and the star Sheriff" as well.

The only anime you could rent at the time was Akira (This is a few years before blockbuster added their japanimation section).

Neither of those left an impression on me. I was a mangafag back then with Darkhorse Comics.

I hate adult swim for not airing that when I was a teenager. I would have appreciated it a hell of a lot more. Still a fantastic show though.

Probably Trigun. I love bebop. I love Kenshin, but the more I think about it Trigun is just that perfect kind of show I can enjoy over and over again and boy does it take me back.

I agree but the anime is superior just because its a show about music.

Really wish there was a season 2 or something.

At least I tried to believe it was real. Right after I finished Tamers, I really got into a mindset that it was real and that I could visit the digital world if I went to that park in Tokyo, but that only lasted for a few days. I still tried to believe for a long time, and also took part in some rituals in front of my computer, intended to open a portal to the digital world like in Adventure 02. But I can't honestly say that I truly believed, I just wanted to, and tried to.

It's not even that strange to believe in Digimon, there has actually been a really rich network of believers communities with roots that go really far back. And populated by a lot of highschoolers and older. Don't know if the communities still exist, though, but belief in Digimon used to have a pretty deep lore.
One thing about the Digimon franchise is that believing in it isn't that farfetched compared to many other anime. One thing is that no one really knows about who invented Digimon, it could have a past similar to Digimon Tamers where something real was made into a cartoon. At the very least, they are hiding something. There's also the thing that digital networks are real, and really mysterious, so we can't really know what may have been created out of them. The connections and abstract network could have given birth to a parallel world. It's not like other franchises, where you have to believe in something with no context to put it into, where you'd have to believe for no reason and come up with how it could be real yourself. Digimon is actually a lot more realistic and believable than a lot of other things.

I don't watch a lot of anime but I've watched Akagi a few times over the years, the first time I watched it I had no idea what was going on but it was still fun.

Akagi was cool as fuck so I wanted to be like him and it really helped me shake of the existential dreads of my mid-teens.

To be honest i think all the moe SoL shit i watched made me open up in some way.
I used to be ashamed of the stuff i liked as a kid and my taste was pretty edgy.
Watching cute stuff made me realise i can just watch whatever i enjoy without thinking about what other could think.
I'm definetely no guy that tells everyone about his "hobbys", especially not this kind of stuff, but i feel like i'm more honest to myself now

IÄm not going as far as saying there could be an entire world, but thought like in GotS about an AI that just kinda exist in the internet and suddenly goes cogito ergo sum is something that fascinates me

The aesthetic of Samurai Champloo was unique and fucking amazing. I watched this when I was 16 and I felt like I aged 10 years by the end of it. I knew the kind of person I wanted to be and how I wanted to live my life after watching this anime. Very few anime capture an aesthetic with flawless storytelling and animation with such style. It created a gap that has yet to be filled after all these years.

it was because of this show that I discovered I could watch shows on the internet, not just on TV, because I was looking to see how it ends. And also because of this show I learned what manga is after I saw all the 500 or so episodes and was still looking to see how it ends. After getting up to date and seeing there is no ending, I discovered memecenter (because mangafox started having ads at the bottom of the page). And thru memecenter I discovered 4chan

FLCL for me too.
I still rewatch it every year or so and come away with a different impression each time.

Runners up go to TTGL, Welcome to the NHK, and Excel Saga

I didn't really like NGE that much when I was 13, but rewatching it as an adult led to it becoming one of my favorite pieces of media. Try giving it another shot if you haven't.
>>
>>152179239

Same for me. When I was 16 I watched TTGL and then pretty much watched NGE right after because I heard they were made by the same people. I was really disappointed at how little action there was and didn't really get what was going on. Watching it again after suffering through depression and reading a plot synopsis really helped me appreciate it.

Media can have a huge impact on a life. I've heard of Anime helping people through really rough times in life. Thats good though that you have such a narrow world view. Stick to it. You'll go far.
>>
Beck and FLCL I guess. Didn't really change anything in my life though.
