>ANBU SUBS

Also I'm surprised they where at so fast at episode 18 of Naruto already in 2003

Naruto 18 came out in Japan February 6, 2003. They had it the next day!
>>
The first anime I got illegally was Akira, which I asked somebody else to download for me.
After that I began pirating personally with Trigun and Excel Saga.
>>
around 2006 but I used youtube most of the time

I brought some pirated dvd with all the Lucky Star episodes. It even had the "This sub is done by fans for fans. Don't sell it."

Man I did the same thing in 2002

We had some shitty groups.google where they were guys trading anime but also selling.
So I got Flame of Recca and Green Green from some guy...
I remember being excited beyond belief.
I watched Flame of Recca in oen go all 42 episodes.
The DVD-Rom I had literally died on episode 39. So I couldn't watch the rest for a week.

Death Note, back in 2006, was the first anime I streamed rather than watching on TV. It was on fucking youtube too. I was super casual back then though, I had only watched stuff that was on TV or what was shown in my high school anime club. That club actually had really good taste in retrospect. Also they were the ones who introduced me to /a/ back in 2005, but I didn't really start browsing til 2006.
>>
Nobody used VHS except one guy who could be trolling.

Man... I'm so old and wise.
>>
I think I downloaded one episode around 2005, but this was before I watched anime, and only downloaded that one.
I think the first anime I downloaded after I got into anime was Neon Genesis Evangelion. Later, there were a few others. This was from downliad sites where episodes were downloaded indivually. I remember using 4chan's board for that to find Princess Tutu. At this point, I still didn't know how to torrent. I think the first time I torrented was in 2012, when I downloaded Utena and Bubblegum Crisis.
>>
>>152164927
After years of watching anime on shitty streaming sites like animecrazy.net (which is now shut down), I finally grew a pair and started torrenting.
The first anime I torrented was Rurouni Kenshin Tsuioku-hen, since my DVD collection is scratched, and since the Blu-ray is out of print.
>>
>>152165204
Man youtube used to have so much anime. It used to be the wild west with barely any competent copyright enforcement. I had one friend who managed to get a channel with almost 100k subscribers and all he did was upload subtitled episodes of anime like Haruhi or Ooran High School or Lucky Star. You wouldn't believe the dumb shit he got as comments either, the kind of morons who relied on Youtube for anime.

I have no idea what the first anime I downloaded was, I could probably find it if I looked through my half-dead hdd. Remnants of an bygone era...

I don't even own anything that can play these anymore in my house.

My laptop has no DVD drive, my PC has no DVD drive. My PS4 does but it can't read these or at least I think not that I'd want to watch them...

We had an anime club where we by our powers of 256Kbit ADSL and 64 Kbit Cable modems downloaded and shared anime.

At one point we had like an excel type sheet where we'd assign people do download stuff. And then we'd all buy DVDs are burn it. I remember not turning my PC off for 2 months, it was at this time that I for the first time ever in my life left my PC to run overnight. That was something to be impressed by back in the day.

It kind of depends on how you define "pirated." I watched a lot of downloaded fansubs in the late-90s/early-00s, but I wouldn't consider those "pirated" since the series weren't licensed at the time. Technically, I didn't really pirate anything until simulcast licensing deals started happening within the last few years.

You could easily bingewatch if you paid attention.
Step 1: load your 72 minutes worth of anime (3 episodes).
Step 2: Make sure it's actually at least 72 minutes. If need be, open a 4th video.
Step 3: Watch anime.
Step 4: Load more anime. The 54 minutes of waiting time are already over.
Step 5: Stop being a faggot and torrent like a normal person.

When I entered college there's this shop near the outside walls that's a hangout of anime fans. Apparently they sell CDs(VCD at the time) of complete/ongoing series. I used to buy some then.

Around 2006-07 I learned how to download FLV files from streams via Orbit and stored those since I use dial-up at the time for my internet.

When we upgraded to DSL around 2008-09 I learned about torrenting, XDCC and direct download. However each file keeps getting bigger so I usually delete series, even those I like, after finishing them.

I remembered when XDCC was the only reliable way you could get anime, and my connection speed barely met the minimum to not be auto-disconnected.

The other way was to beg for accounts for FTP anime server, which was illegally hosted in some company's server. It was a time when few understood the net.

And yet another way was to buy some shitty vcds (not dvds) from shops owned by some shady Chinese, that also sold warez. If you're lucky it was not dubbed in some ching-chong.

a friend used to rent fansubs from the local japan/anime/weeaboo store in the 90s, which i'm sure wasn't exactly legal. we got utena fansubs from there. also got gundam wing fansubs from another friend.

after that I think the first digital fansubs I came across were some love hina fansubs? either that or some FLCL fansubs that were of horrible quality. I distinctly remember somebody did a fansub with a test encode of the first few episodes at 480p (or maybe even 480i, deinterlaced?) quality which was nearly unheard of at the time. i think using (I wanna say) an early version of the divx codec.

i wish i still had all those subs, i deleted them a while ago. they would have been historically interesting, i think, assuming they didn't become corrupted after all those years.

digital fansubs were so fucking hard to find and took forever to download before bit torrent, you guys have no fucking idea how easy you had it even in the mid 2000s. i never used irc because irc scared me and still does but i did use direct connect and whatever ftp servers i could find. and what i did in turn was easier than what people had to do for fansubs before then, where you basically had to go to a nearby largish college anime club to get fansubs. thankfully there was a pretty big one near where i grew up so shit got around.

I was like 12 and didn't know what the fuck I was doing, although I'm pretty sure that "open more tabs" trick wouldn't work. There were ways to get around the limit, I just didn't know them. I never implied that I still stream.

>friend decide to buy pirated yosuga no sora DVD for cheap
>few guys on class decide to shove into his room and watch it together
I miss the simpler times.

Dragonball GT in 2002 was probably the first, after that probably naruto and bleach during 2003. I'm 100% sure that in 2005 I downloaded Gundam Wing.

Then I downloaded NGE and after that it just became more and more.

Right in the nostalgia, my man. My family had dial-up so I wold open 9 youtube tabs before school every morning so I could watch 3 episodes in the evening. God forbid one didn't load or else I'd just miss 10 minutes. Not worth waiting another 8 hours to load.

I also bought Chinese bootlegs from cons and went to the community college's weekly anime viewings. They just showed fansubs, so pirating by proxy.

I used to watch tons on TV until the the mid 00s, after that TV started replacing anime schedules with TV series/informercials, then it took up to 2009 before I started torrenting some anime.

I brought a pirated DVD of Trigun back in 2006. Pic very related, probably the oldest file I have on my PC.
Started torrenting only in 2013 because like this anon >>152177138 I was retarded.

12 years ago. Holy shit I'm old.
I miss those times tho, I even had firends to come over and discuss stuff while burning cds with couple of episodes at glorious 4-8x speed.

>not burning at 2x speed so the CDs wouldn't get fucked by a shitty CD burner or whatever that problem was.
>>
>implying I had the bandwith back then to pirate anime
Youtube and I had some really weird streaming program that gave me chinese tv which also had some japanese channels and then I kinda watched it there.
