If you want to experience the story in a *slightly* different way, you can look into the manga. It's not going to change things up all that much.

There's a few chapters worth reading. It's like a rebuild variation but people don't hate it as much.

Asuka has a different introduction, Kaji has a backstory where he explains to Shinji why he is a shithead, Gendo actually speaks to Shinji and explains to him why he hates him. It's worth reading I think. Rei has more scenes.
