There will never be another one Keion levels of big. It was one of the first Kirara adaptations, but now the market is too saturated for anything to stand out. The fact that Gochiusa managed to get that big is a miracle by itself. I remember looking at the tweets on the official twitter when the anime just started and every tweet had pathetic 50ish number of likes, and look at it now.

Damn, that is rather astounding. JCstaff's obvious budget of a half-eaten McChicken and a dime under the couch is what doomed KMB from the get-go. They just really did not like Stella.

The Anime Consortium gets lots of money from Chinese information companies to finance anime shows. In fact, they gave so much money that by the way a production committee system works, the Chinese would practically own the video rights by being the majority sponsor. To ensure that the Chinese don't get much to say, the money they gave is divided up by the Anime Consortium into lots of smaller parcels and then used to finance tons more shows, which is how we've gotten a ridiculous amount of anime shows in 2016 in the first place.
This ensures that the Anime Consortium still maintains control over the video and electronic distribution rights of those IPs while greatly softening the losses from the terrible disc sales thanks to a big healthy cushion of Chinese money.
In a few years, this show will be sold with a bunch of others as a package deal to several streaming services and then just turn into pure profit for the main money givers, which will all still be the Anime Consortium Japan.
Meanwhile, the Chinese got tricked into financing stuff they never wanted.
They of course know that, which is why they're now starting to just hire the more fringe independent Japanese anime studios directly to produce stuff more in tune with what Chinese viewers want. It's cheap-looking crap, but at least it's the cheap-looking crap they want, and not cheap-looking crap that the Anime Consortium served them in form of Stella no Mahou.

It's sad for Stella no Mahou to be a pawn in a money business politics game, but such is the nature of the beast when dealing with business conglomerates that have to make sure that they keep up with the letter of their contracts.

What does Stella no Mahou have to do with this? It's Houbunsha who mainly finances these because it boosts manga sales. Even if BD sales are crap, it might've resulted in a bunch of people buying every volume of the manga.
