WoT can only be done as an anime because Hollywood would fuck up the central theme of endless violence and super busty women, all while maintaining a weirdly lighthearted tone because the harshest words anyone says is "bloody". It's perfect for anime.

And mindbreak in general.

>one of the Seanchan's goals was to collar every Aes Sedai, known for their pride and power, and force them to become obedient pets through physical and psychological torture and general degradation but never anything that would leave a mark

Not to mention that perverted male Forsaken that got put into the body of a busty young girl and gave many late night full body massages to Egwene.

Or the fact that Aviendha, Min, and Elayne could all physically feel when one of them was riding the Dragon cock.

Man if Jordan had been a more modern writer with the obsession of making things more gritty then we'd have full on rape dungeons and Trolloc breeding raids rather than the not so subtle suggestion of what Myddraal do with captured women.

I always felt like animation was probably the best way to capture and illustrate bonding between warders and aes sedai. I can't imagine how you could communicate a character feeling urgency from another character in a live action scenario without breaking the pacing and having them think about it or speak it alloud. Animation would allow the use of colors or non realistic visual cues that the characters are reading off of one another.

Is this what fantasy fans felt like in the shadow of Tolkien in the 60s, and in the shadow of LeGuin, Donaldson, and Brooks in the 70s?

This is perfect. After all, anime is creatively bankrupt and is all about generic re-hashes of the same few stories. Only natural that it also chooses to adapt from one of the dullest franchise in the history of movie franchises. Each episode following the boy wizard and his pals from Hogwarts Academy as they fight assorted villains has been indistinguishable from the others. Aside from the gloomy imagery, the series’ only consistency has been its lack of excitement and ineffective use of special effects?all to make magic unmagical, to make action seem inert.

Perhaps the die was cast when Rowling vetoed the idea of Spielberg directing the series; she made sure the series would never be mistaken for a work of art that meant anything to anybody?just ridiculously profitable cross-promotion for her books. The Harry Potter series might be anti-Christian (or not), but it’s certainly the anti-James Bond series in its refusal of wonder, beauty and excitement. No one wants to face that fact. Now, thankfully, they no longer have to.

>But at least the books are g-good though!
The writing is dreadful; the book was terrible. As I read, I noticed that every time a character went for a walk, the author wrote instead that the character "stretched his legs."

I began marking on the back of an envelope every time that phrase was repeated. I stopped only after I had marked the envelope several dozen times. I was incredulous. Rowling's mind is so governed by cliches and dead metaphors that she has no other style of writing. Later I read a lavish, loving review of Harry Potter by the same Stephen King. He wrote something to the effect of, "If these kids are reading Harry Potter at 11 or 12, then when they get older they will go on to read Stephen King." And he was quite right. He was not being ironic. When you read "Harry Potter" you are, in fact, trained to read Stephen King

Anyone read Zelazny's Lord of Light? It would make for a marvelous movie. Underdog Sam fighting the faux Indian pantheon in a weird fantasy scifi mix is classic animu material. there is a LOT of lesbians and gays in WOT, just RJ never actually had one of those scenes, and only passingly referenced it.

Fuck, Matt bangs chicks left and right and it's never actually mentioned until the MILF goes all reverse rape on his ass.

It's just rape, dude. Gender doesn't change that.

Reverse rape would be extremely consensual sex.

I'd like Harry Dresden if we're talking books. I mean, it's basically Shounen if you imagine Harry as a 12 year old instead of a 30 something man. It's got the whole tragic past thing. Him slowly getting stronger. A group of close friends and rivalry. Tragic brother story. Power level jerking later on.

Then there is The Iron Druid Chronicles. Which is basically a mix of shounen jerk off / harem hero fucking everyone and everything. And his side kick dog who he can talk to.

But if we're talking vidya. I'd like something like Dishonoured. Not particularly because I like the game, but because I enjoy the theme.

I can't remember the name of it, but there was this book I read years and years ago. I think it was some polish folk tale and I don't think it was ever translated officially. I've always thought that would be amazing.

It basically starts off in this bizarre fantasy where this young elf that was ex-communicated from his clan and aimlessly travels the world when years later he meets the Reaper. Only, the reaper isn't what he thought. The reaper is essentially a title past on from one person to another, and the person that holds the current title is an 8 year old elf boy who survived a war and became an orphan. Afterward he accepted the title of the reaper to get revenge but it split his personality in two taking in that much power or some shit. And so one was The Good, which was called Rabbit. And the other side was the bad, which was called Wolf. The hunter and the prey. They end up travelling together in this weird world and it basically turns into a book about healing and good feels.

I never read the last one but despite how weird it got I did actually like the Atlantis one for some reason. The one just before that with the guys who advocated hunting all species that don't serve a direct purpose to humanity to extinction was shitty over all but the villains were batshit and OTT enough to make it enjoyable.
>>
>>151938408
Dishonoured has pretty cool lore actually. Pandyssia is basically the same place as the Dark Continent in HxH in that it's fucking huge and dwarfs every other landmass and is totally unexplored because it's full of kaiju and other monsters, but the ones that actually pose the biggest threat to humanity are the tiny ones like the plague rats or the blood flies.
>>
>>151943532
Main thing that ruined Time Paradox for me was Opal being the villain. It felt pretty contrived.

The part that really bothered me is that the author forgot that Opal's personality changed after her coma, and she shouldn't be batshit crazy at that point in the timeline.

Speaking of YA series no one ever read. Fucking no one read them in English but they were pretty popular in BR land, and reasonably popular in Nippon given they're still publishing new editions over there with original artwork and everything. They wouldn't be too expensive to animate outside a select few scenes in later books and they steadily get more and more batshit and anime as they continue.
>>
>>151944250
I couldn't get into 2 honestly, the beginning was even slower than in the first and the level design seems less intuitive despite being bigger. I'm definitely gonna try again at some point because I've heard good stuff about later levels but it just doesn't feel as good from what I played.

While it would make a great change from the typical harem anime, the fact that the only waifu acceptable to the general audience is the yandere in the sewers makes it unworkable.

>>
>>151944836
They get less dark but far more violent as they go on surprisingly. I'm pretty sure the author said he was incredibly depressed when writing the first two which explains how grim they were. It was interesting watching how weird they got after that, each one was consecutively better written than the last but in exchange it got more violent, less grim and MUCH more bizarre. Like in the final one it turns out the earth was a fucking spaceship built by spider aliens billions of years ago and humanity is descended from a slave race they picked up somewhere along the way on their cosmic road trip and the earth is now back on course and heading away from the sun and the surface of the planet is going to freeze over. They were entertaining for the darkness and bizarreness alone honestly.

I think a lot of the hate wasn't because of its popularity, but because it was still ongoing and Jordan would stall like a champ with silly side plots (bowl of the winds, shaido aiel) instead of moving the story forward. Things started moving again later on, probably once Jordan knew he was terminally ill and Sanderson then finished it in 3 books after Jordan's demise. Also didn't help that most of the womenfolk Jordan wrote were infuriating and/or petty knowitall cunts (spearheaded by Perrin's wife), which made large passages of the story a chore to read. At least the pacing issues become somewhat bearable, when you know where the finish line is.

Faile's kidnapping would have perhaps been more ebarable if Perrin's half of that plotline wasn't entirely

Well, sure, but aren't those usually improvised? It'd be hard to adapt something from the script of an improv production. I don't really know much about commedia dell'arte, but either way I'd be happy with it. I really liked Twelfth Night, so if those are similar I'd probably be pleased with them as well.

Agreed. The series would become a lot better if anything regarding Faile, including her existence, had been edited out. "Must save muh kidnapped Faile" is probably the worst offender when it came to bad side plots. To throw Perrin a bone, he could have hooked up with that busty mayor/queen of that small city state instead, who took an interest in him. Berelain, I think. Nynaeve's "oh shit Rand and Lan are gonna kill people in cold blood" probably still remains one of my favourite moments in WoT, mostly because she clearly doesn't like the idea but still doesn't throw a fit like she would have done earlier in the series.

I mean, she has Jean beaten and throws both of them on a ship. Plus, she's pretty cold on the offset. Not to mention being a bitch in the early parts of the flashback.Plus, Lynch just has to have her mention that she's been fucking her way to the top in her literal first appearance in the current timeline.

But the biggest problem is that she's not like any of the Bastards. Every single one has been funny, charming and you instinctively like them.

Sabetha wasn't witty or charming. She wasn't funny or memorable. She didn't really have any qualities that would indicate that she deserved Locks's affection for her.

And it's made even worse that Lynch introduces Ezri in book 2, who was super likable and worked great with Jean. On a side note, not having a thread in Republic about Jean dealing with his grief was a HUGE misstep.

I actually liked that Sabetha was fairly cold to them, because a lot of fantasy stuff tends to fall into the trap of either having all criminals be the best of buddies or all utter twats without redeeming features. I quite liked the balance Lynch struck with Sabetha, making her someone who will use the emotions of those around her to her advantage when she can, but if she actually cares for them try not to leave them utterly fucked.

As for her fucking her way 'to the top', that wasn't the impression I got (or it's dimmed since I read the book). She's frank with Locke that she's used sex in the past as part of a job or for simple pleasure, but hardly that it was her MO.

Locke's affection for her certainly seemed to be overstated though, but then even previously that's been how other characters in-universe had largely reacted to them.

I agree that she was certainly less entertaining (desu, I like Nazca more than Sabetha, despite her lack of screen time), and that Lynch dropped the ball with Jean. I'm hopeful it'll be brought back. I'm hopeful it'll be brought up again in Thorn, when he's not to caught up in Locke's near-death.

>>151952392
I mean I'm not the biggest fan of Denna but there are far worse female characters out there. Denna is a teenage girl that thought she had this handsome, intelligent but innocent boy all to herself as a reprieve to her almost courtesan lifestyle. Then after she gets in a nasty fight with him she starts hearing songs and stories about how he fucked the most beautiful woman in existence and he starts feverishly dating every vagina within a 15 mile radius and they all spread their own stories.

She doesn't necessarily have the right to expect him to be there always for her childish enjoyment but part of being young is being selfish and holding unfair expectations for those around you. She fits her character well.

It's easy to forget that Denna and Kvothe are like 15-16 at best.

Now old fantasy/SF would make fantastic anime.
Jack Vance's the Dying Earth and Demon Princes.
Clark Ashton Smith's Hyperborea and Zothique.
Fritz Leiber's Fafhrd & The Grey Mouser.
Robert E. Howard's Conan.
Leigh Brackett's the Sea Kings of Mars.
Zelazny's Lords of Light.
Poul Anderson's The Broken Sword.

If we're keeping it to those still alive then Gene Wolfe's Book of the New Sun would be fantastic.

I would put Winters Heart as the worst because Elayne and Failes whore adventures distract you from Mat and Rand doing cool shit.

But even still it ends with Mat kidnapping his loli waifu and Rand starting a crazy war in Sharadr Logoth.

Crossroads has a lot of setup for the next book which ends up being my favorite since Knife of Dreams is an entire book of plot payoffs and cool shit happenings but you get a break from it with Mats lessons in how to romance a loli and how to tell Aes Sedai to fuck off.
>>

>>
>>151962250
I like the Witcher but it feels like an Elenium knock off.

>>151962334
I didn't recommend them. I said I like them.

Blood Song was OK. I didn't like Tower Lord, so I dropped the series there. The Waking Fire is OK. Will he shit the second book up? Maybe. Probably. Don't care. I handle fantasy book on a single book basis. Writers should stop feeding publishits and start doing single novels again. It's obvious most of them are forced to continue stories that don't need continuation. Blood Song was a wonderful self contained story start to finish.

And I think Tom Lloyd is finally coming into his prime with God Fragments. Not necessarily the best written fantasy book I've read but one of the better defined worlds I've seen as of late.

Again, it's personal tastes. I'd read any of these books over WoT - well safe for book 8 and book 2 maybe.

Part of the problem with most modern English-language fantasy is that it's just too damn long. Series with multiple 600-page doorstopper volumes are just too wordy to fit into 13 or 26 half-hour episodes. Older fantasy authors such as Vance are just so much more concise. Vance's SF would work also, see "Planet of Adventure". A lot of Vance's novels are fix-ups of serialized magazine short stories so should break down into 24-minute episodes fairly neatly.

That being said, I'd like to see an adaptation of "The Rithmatist". It's a short, standalone novel about a magic system that involves battles between animated chalk drawings.

It's a shame to see all the WoT hate because I'm reading it right now and loving every second. Even though I admit Winters Heart was pretty boring I wouldn't say the series is bad, and I'm well beyond when everyone says Jordan was on his way out and that it affected his writing. Every climax has been hype as shit with the exception of Crown of Swords, and the locations, lore, and world building is top notch enough for me to keep chugging through the slow bits.

Back to the point, I think foreign historical fiction would be an untapped goldmine, but maybe that's cause I like history a lot. But The Illiad or mythology stories would work well enough since they're all pretty straightforward, I think there's already been a few shows devoted to telling Japanese myths and legends, why not branch out?

An adaption of the book of Revelations would be rad as fuck.

Lolita would be cool but I feel like they'd make ol Humph look good and idealistic so as not to trigger otaku.

His portrayal of females was quite infuriating though. Everytime a woman would appear in the narration, she'd have a fucking broom up her ass and they'd be bitches towards everyone but especially other women. I mean, having girls running around naked in a desert where a scorching day gives place to bone-freezing night while you're nicely settled in your tent with your pairs most likely chatting nice and easy is not something I enjoyed. Whenever females were together, all they talked about was how men were dangerous and how they should keep ascertaining their hold on power like true feminist douchebags. The former Head of the Aes Sedai really did improve when she got kicked out of the Tower and started going tsundere on the captain.

The only good girls were Moiraine and Nynaeve. Egwene is a shit. And I can't get myself to keep reading (I'm at book 10)

>Didn't like book 4
>Didn't like the Aiel Waste
>Doesn't like the constant bickering between sexes
I'm in the camp that Jordan knew what he was doing when making male/female relations. It's a really interested gendered society where gender isn't the main focus. It's not some feminist novel by Atwood, it's a much more lighthearted look between sexes that doesn't try and stand on a soapbox or even touch things like oppression or sexism. All the men gossip and think they know what they're doing and think the women are too uptight, and all the women keep themselves together and know the men are all woolheaded buffoons. And both sides are totally right.

I'm forcing myself to like Egwene but I'm getting pretty sick of it, especially since she's in love with Gawyn, aka the worst character in the series.

It's not about killing people, it's more about creating the world with no fun or happiness. Maybe I was butthurt because I've just read diary of a gulag survivor and he was less dull and grey and sad than First Law's characters and plot. After something realistic the world presented in this series probably seemed more fake and tryhard than it would've otherwise. And the ending was retarded iirc, the king, of all people should know that the magician was all smoke and mirrors, just send 50 guards at him or assasinate him in his sleep. For fuck's sake, a few dozen bandits rendered him unconscious.
>>

She also played a vital in the absolute craziness that was the end of Winter's Heart (shit was off the charts, balls to the wall awesome).

I'm willing to bet Shakespeare had some tsundere characters but I'm drawing a blank. Tsundere isn't an explicitly Japanese behavior, they just put a good label on it.
>>
I can't understand how there isn't an anime already.

Did you miss the part where he got his magic back?

Whatever. Gotta say I disagree. Especially after the next 3 books, all of which have decently happy endings.

Pretty early, too. When he saw her bathing and she freaks the fuck out and accidentally opens a portal to the other size of the planet that just happens to be experiencing a blizzard.

Cue obligatory sharing bodyheat scene.

Actually seemed more intelligent to me than most sci-fi, but I was a little kid.

It wasn't that he only had the power when holding the stone? Then I don't remember correctly. Fair enough.
Magic sickness being radiation sickness was pretty though, though it's a little overdone.

>What the fuck is going to happen now
All sorts of cool shit.

Be prepared that Crossroads has some neat moments in it Mat but its really one long build up for the next book when a million things come crashing down.

It was especially cute when Grotka's brother-in-law started getting better only to die.
>>

Ah yeah, now I remember.

Felt good huh? I still remember the moment I was reading that shit back in 2013 or so. Couldn't stand in one fucking place with how excited I was.
>what the fuck is going to happen now
Narration slowdown. Aes Sedai camping. Boring political stuff. I stopped at Crossroads of Twilight so I can't tell you much.

First book was 10/10

>I stopped at Crossroads of Twilight so I can't tell you much

The last three are a shot of adrenaline. Action, action, MORE ACTION.

Lots of plot points get wrapped up. Lots of characters getting closure.

Shit, A Memory of Light can accurately be described as "900 pages of battles."

It's fucking awesome.

The guy who wrote it is a very talented artist. Didn't he do a ton of illustrations for the series?

It's more entry-level than Malazan. First book was good though, second was average, third was atrocious because of the "romance".
>>
>>151971356
That's because you're not meant to socialize over books.

Literature is a personal experience. Only one person can read a book. It's not like an anime or movie where multiple people can watch at once.

Please give it a try again, there's an unending fountain of great stories in books that you can find nowhere else, no one should let other people sully their reading experience.

Faggot.
People HAVE to be guided or else they'll end up reading shit enjoying shit and supporting shit which will lead to more shit being produced.

If they're too stupid to listen and get angry at not being supposed to read shit then they should just go back to FF.net or pick up video games for a more utterly braindead hobby.

You are like the angriest motherfucker to be so spiteful of other people that you've completely forgone an entire form of entertainment, and not just something like movies or videogames, but reading, the like OG pass time and the basis for pretty much every other entertainment form thereafter.

You're a real piece of work.

Second book was better written than the first, but had a worse plot.

Third book had a garbage plot. But to be honest, I read Lynch for his characters and dialogue, so it wasn't that bad.

I'd like to think that the Death Gate Cycle could work as a decent series, but Haplo seems like a secondary character in each of the books until he's visited every world. Before book five, it seems like they left him pretty unexplored in an attempt to set up L O R E.

I don't think the target audience has any baring on what narrator you get.
I think it has more to do with expected number of sales more than anything else nowadays.
You don't want your a-listers doing fringe shit. And you don't want blockbuster series being voiced by Joe Shmoe.

Was that the part with "And then there was darkness and within the darkness there was blackness so dark that even the blackest blackness wouldn't compare to how fucking dark it was within. But wait. We gotta got darker. In there it was even blacker than...". While it was a catharsis that Rand finally got shit done, I got somewhat tired of Jordan's prose in that part.
