Can we talk about Death Parade?
>>
It's on my to watch list. Seems cool.
>>
it's good enough but nothing special
>>
>>151891773
Be prepared to take it slow or you might burn yourself out. It's one of those shows that was well suited to watching weekly instead of binge watching.
>>
>>151891703
its good and ending wrapped everything up neatly. whats there to talk about exactly?
feels thread?
>>
>>151892276
Pretty much, I guess. Reminiscing about the good stuff.

I basically just want to give it more exposure because it was kind of underrated so it doesn't get talked about anymore. I don't think it sold that great either so good thing for the conclusive ending.
>>
>>151891703
It was a pretty middling show. That's all I really have to say, shit was two years ago.
>>
Sure. Majority of its staff including a Madhouse co-producer went to studio NUT. So if you liked the directional approach of this, then try Youjo Senki

>>151892511
Agreed about the ones you listed. I also thought the idol fangirl's arc had a surprisingly poignant ending despite the comedic nature of her character. I liked the part where she's talking about how she believes her life must have been worth something and Ginti just says "Wouldn't that be nice?" in a cynical voice and sends the elevator down.
>>
>>151892694
The interesting thing about that is how the moment he does it, the cat leaves his arms and it's specifically mentioned in the epilogue that it never returned.

Also, remember Ginti's Japanese dolls he was so fond of? In the epilogue, he was polishing a Mayu one.

DP is full of neat details like that, it's great.
>>
>>151892736
That IS pretty interesting. I love those kinds of details but it's been a while since I watched it so I forgot about those little things. It's nice when you notice all this subtle stuff about a show and realize just how much care went into making it.

Bonus points for Mayu having to pick between either him or Harada and those two having the same voice actor.
>>
>>151893669
>but from DN lore he is stuck in limbo(no heaven or hell for death note users)
Actually DN lore in one of the How to Reads points out that there's no heaven or hell for anyone, suggesting that Ryuk was lying to make the Death Note sound more appealing. "I can kill people without going to hell? Cool!"

The "MU" in DN could very well be the same thing as "the void" in Death Parade, with the bar simply being a stop on the way there.

Wow, that's actually one of my favorite League of Legends artists. Pretty awesome that he did something for Death Parade.

Based on the Patreon link I'm assuming it was commissioned. That's probably the only effective way to get art of lesser known anime.
>>
Started out great, but the overarching plot ruined it. Should have stayed episodic and kept the up the mystery behind the death games.
>>
>>151893376
>He's already working on his next own anime original though!
Really? His work on Mob was fantastic, so that's good news. What studio?
>>
>>151891703
I liked the setting but it was too "fleshed out". In the end the series focused too much on how the world worked and expanded the cast with some pretty dull drama, switching the focus from mysterious atmosphere to something different entirely. As the atmosphere was one of the greatest things I enjoyed in the series, I didn't like the TV that much honestly. Entire thing felt like a wasted potential.

I once got a ridiculously high number of people saying Pleiades was AotY 2015 in one of my threads and I still know that's not necessarily the consensus. Good show though, I still like Gainax.

It felt like a waste of potential since the dead people's stories failed to be engaging. The only story I really liked was the detective vs the brother, that was fucking good. No matter how good it is. I can't get my mind off the fact that it's "Everyone is Eventually Screwed: The Anime"

The utter, hopeless, bleakness of the inevitable fate of every human character in this show cancels out all the good things.
>>
>>151900946
>Even if show is unique it doesn't make it good by default.

Death Parade had a pretty amazing atmosphere though and presented situations capable of keeping the viewer guessing about the not only the identity of each player but their eventual fate within each episode as well; no plot armor meant that you never quite knew what was going to happen and the result was a series that was more unsettling than the bulk of anime and manga classified as horror.

I won't disagree with the claims that it's "dull" or "boring" since that is after all a matter of opinion and I know it's not for everyone but yeah, I do think it's a little much to call it "shallow." There's a ton of little things to look at if you're into that kind of stuff.

Their eventual fate at a certain point in the future after a certain number if reincarnations, is the same. Every single one, voided.
>>
>>151901304
>>151901328

No, I'm not talking about "death". I'm talking about the void. It's canon that those who go there actually suffer until they disappear.

Every single soul, Chiaki, the cute lovers, everyone, will eventually suffer there after a certain number of reincarnations.
>>
>>151901367
When did it say that?
>>
>>151901367
>>151901415
You're speculating based on your belief of the nature of reincarnation.
>>
>>151900535
>Is there any other show that actually resembles Death Parade?
In certain major respects, there's anime/manga like Bartender, Shigofumi, Skyhigh, Ikigami, etc.
>>
>>151901466

It didn't explicitly say that. But it makes sense if you think about it.

Take those who were voided for example. Was it their first ever human life or were they reincarnated previously? How many reincarnations did it take before they were finally sent to the void?

How many reincarnations will it take before Chiaki is sent to the void. Did the series mention that there are "special" souls destined to be infinitely reincarnated?
>>
>>151893371
I remember being so excited thinking by the last episode it was going to be revealed that this show was indeed connected to Death Note. Like that was the biggest twist of the show.
>>
>>151901499

Are you saying the reincarnated souls in the series are "special" in that they will always pass the test after each life no matter what?
>>
>>151901678
It's a belief one could reasonably hold.
>>
>>151901499
>>151901678

To add to this I'm not talking about the nature of reincarnation, I'm talking about statistics.

In order for dice to always land at a specific number it must be rigged, otherwise it will eventually land at a "bad" number.
>>
>>151901656
>Decim turns to the camera.
>"I guess in the end this truly was a Death Note."
>>
I really liked this show but since I haven't seen any eps since it aired, I can only remember a few eps in detail. I'm planning on buying the bluray.
>>
>>151901774

It's a nice speculation, I was hoping for that as well, but there's not a single sign or clue of it anywhere in the series no matter how much I looked. A simpler answer is that statistics will eventually win in the end.
>>
>>151901258
>Atmosphere
Literally ruined by expanding the premise and explaining how the story works.
>eventual fate within each episode as well
You're confusing this with the speculation of the very first episodes: it's later in detail explained what happens to each player and even what happens when the elevator enters the void.
>No plot armor
Obviously you knew the series doesn't suddenly kill all its main characters.

The series was interesting, but overall the further it went worse it got, up until the point I had hard time actually caring about the last episodes. It was mediocre shit, let it go.
>>
>>151901990
>You're confusing this with the speculation of the very first episodes

That was never the subject of speculation. The general assumption from the very beginning was that something horrible happened, the nature of which was simply elaborated on. The tension within each episode was derived from whether each soul was either reincarnated or cast into the void.

>Literally ruined by expanding the premise and explaining how the story works

None of which got shafted by the before-mentioned elaboration.

>No plot armor
It killed one of them. And within any given episode half the cast had no plot armor at all.

>>
>>151902319
>And within any given episode half the cast had no plot armor at all.
Not that anon but the fact that the expendable constantly changing cast between episodes died because the premise of the series pretty much stated they are going to die isn't something to write home about. Be proud about any other element of the show, just not this one.

Speculation around the first episodes was based around this. There were even huge pictures with walls of text floating around the board. Were you even here when the series aired?
>the nature of which was simply elaborated on
>None of which got shafted by the before-mentioned elaboration.
This is pretty much what killed the series for me. Every single story aspect was "elaborated" on and the series lost majority of the charm that billiards had, when there still was sense of mystery and creepy atmosphere that couldn't be made sense of.
>It killed one of them. And within any given episode half the cast had no plot armor at all.
Who cares about changing cast who are destined to die anyway? There wasn't even surprise element or tension of any kind. When you praise the aspect of "no plot armor" you are pretty much claiming that the story characters feel vulnerable and the writing is unpredictable, both elements that DP lost in the long run.

It was mediocre shit, let it go.
>>
>>151902600
Maybe so, but it's still retarded to sell the premise by claiming it has no plot armor.
>>
The ice skating episode was better than anything seen in the entire run of Yuri on Ice.
>>
>>151902684
>There were even huge pictures with walls of text floating around the boar
>walls of text about something that ultimately didn't matter that much

Going into it as part of the world building was interesting, but the actual source of drama came from which of the two doors either of the two souls went into. But nothing fundamental really changed or was ruined when it was revealed that the losing character was sent to the void rather than to a generic fire and brimstone hell.
>>
>>151902857
How it is possible that the speculation that "didn't matter that much" was much more interesting that what the series had ultimately to offer?
>>
>>151902684
>There were even huge pictures with walls of text floating around the board.
Can I get one of these?
>>
>>151902925
The show was a character drama, it was never about misteries or crazy twists and characters dying, despite what you seem to think.
>>
>>151902925
Who knows. Perhaps for the same reason that people autistically create walls of text about power levels? The tendency of some of people to do that sort of thing isn't a knock against the work they're writing the text about though.

I have on multiple occasions stated that my beef with the series is how the atmosphere got less tense the more it was expanded on. The premise worked better as a stand-alone death billiards.

>autistically create walls of text about power levels
But those are rarely more interesting than the series they are writing on about.

Neither is the question of whether the losing souls go to the void or simply to hell. It's trivia.

That wasn't me.
But the series' intention was to talk about communication and understanding, which is why it was Decim's and Chiyuki's relationship that tied all together in the end.

But why is the trivia more interesting than the entire series? Doesn't it tell about the series quality.

Anything episodic is similar, Shigofumi and Shinigami no Ballad off of the top of my head are almost the same formula.

Even so, it's the one of the best memories I have of the series. It was a downhill ride from there on.

It isn't. But there are always people who obsess over it anyways.
>>
>>151903477
It's not, but there are people that obsess over Eva's lore over the characters too.

Not that anon, but the main charm point for death billiards was the mysterious and charming atmosphere. It still existed in the first episodes and encouraged speculation. It was less about speculating trivial details, more about trying to understand how the world actually worked. The more you knew about the world however the more you understood there wasn't anything worth speculating about hidden under a layer of poor writing. The series we got was very different in tone than the ova, and frankly somewhat disappointing.

Truly a magical moment. I fondly rememeber how much /a/ speculated during the first few episodes.
it might not have been the best thing ever, perhaps even a tad disappointing, but it was definitely of higher quality than a lot of shows that we got past year.

They weren't very happy times, really - Naruto was everywhere even though it was fucking over, /pol/ was hemorrhaging, Liar Game was pulling some bullshit about China, and we were learning that moot wasn't here forever.
