Why do people continue to rate the Garden of Words? It's pretty but ultimately pointless. I feel like End of Evangelion should be higher. Paprika is nothing special. A DBZ movie? And it's the Broly one at that? Come on. Battle of Gods is way better, for example.

As for missing entries Anthem of the Heart, Inverted Patema, Expelled from Paradise, Tamako Love Story, Magical Sisters Yoyo & Nene, Kara no Kyoukai 5 or Mirai, Eve no Jikan, Nerawareta Gakuen deserve some consideration and could be squeezed in there somewhere. Personally I thought Eva 3.33 is the best out of the Rebuild movies too for bringing something new, taking us into Shinji's mind & this chaotic new world and challenging the established fandom consensus.

For the rest it looks like a solid opinionated list.

That means that he's a 'freelance writer' who wrote this post. Jason DeMarco is just some random gaijin related to anime destribution in the States that they brought in to add some extra flavour. It's really obvious that OP is the Toussaint.

>>151828532
Not really. Akira manga is better. Paprika is only visually interesting. The story was underwhelming. And these are the "top picks". Get rid with your ancient mentality that if it either is 1) old or 2) circlejerked over by the local elitist community that hey it must be automatically good.

Its pacing and characterization is total and utter shit though. You can have all the plot points and animation behind it but when your main character is basically a dumbass that only wants to go into space because of his dick it kinda loses all its credibility. Half the movie i was wondering what the fuck is the reason any of this is doing anything and the other half was just me wondering why people give a shit suddenly for no reason? The entire setup was that nobody actually cared about the actual space program and it was all a load of bullshit untill said dumbass stood up because he wanted to get a vagina. Then suddenly everyone cares and its space time.

The movie was gorgeous but it was a real clusterfuck.

He wants to go into space despite it potentially being a suicide mission because he sees himself as an utter failure with becoming the first astronaut as his ultimate chance to prove himself.

The engineers had wanted to go to space for decades and he just happened to be a candidate at just the right time when they were almost ready and he was readily willing to throw his life away unlike the other office grunts.

It's still entry-level as it encompasses the plebeian conception of what they think art is. That is, the average person can watch it and think "wow, I didn't really get it and it had lots of nonlinear imagery, I just watched art", and turn around and wear that as a badge of egotism or representative taste.

It's not the bottom rung of the ladder but it's still quite accessible for lots of people.

Tamako Love Story, yes. Eve no Jikan, yes. The others, no.

My point is that these top picks have their own flaws. In the end it's subjective. We're clouded by biases. But I don't appreciate when completely fine movies get comments that belittle them and treat them as bottom-tier trash. I personally dislike K-ON but it is a finely produced anime.

>>151829005
Historical relevance doesn't mean something is good, and like I said sometimes anime retain their historic relevance even though they aren't all that good. You hear all about that one classic, and then when you watch it, you found a lot of unsatisfactory aspects about it. Not an uncommon occurrence.

AnoHana is melodrama. I didn't think AotH was, especially since it didn't focus too much on the drama and mostly focused on preparing the play. Jun confessed, got cleanly rejected and they moved on. That's not melodramatic. EfP had satisfactory CG for its time. It could be better but I've also seen worse.

>>151829264
No.

Does Tamako Love Story do anything new?

Does Eve no Jikan break new ground? It had a chance, and it came close, but in the end it was just a typical slice of life anime with hints of sci-fi elements.

And on the other hand we have Paprika and Akira. Paprika, with its sweeping imaginative imagery and unique soundtrack. Being Inception before Inception. Akira, objectively one of the best hand-animated films of all time and a testament to how beautiful traditional anime can look.

These are facts. You cannot declare that Tamako Love Story is better than Akira, a masterpiece, because Akira's manga was better and you liked the Tamako love Story better. Akira sets out to do far more. And even if it doesn't achieve all of it, it's still a landmark in animation and deserves a title as one of the best anime of all time.

Aside from a few movies which were notable for influencing later directors, there are't really all that many movies that really stood the test of time and still stand on their own from the 1900-1970 period. I don't mind Akira being highly regarded and being #1 on this list even if I'm not a big fan of it since it is incredibly iconic. But Paprika is not Satoshi Kon's best movie, and the whole dream thing must have been done before him.

How many products do something new? And merely because they do something new does not merit them a spot on the list. It needs to be new and actually influence the industry. If we apply this to TV anime then Lucky Star, Haruhi, Madoka, Sword Art Online, The Idolm@ster deserve to be in the top 100 because of the ways they've influenced the anime industry the years after.

To each their own, but I'm not a fan of their movies. Magic Boy, Alakazam the great, the orphan boy, arabian nights, cyborg 009, jack and the witch, flying phantom ship, I wouldn't recommend these movies to noone but the most completionist anime movie lover. That is not to say that I dislike all their early movies, since animal treasure island, wan wan chushingura, and beyond the moon I do like.
>>
>>151830232
Jack to Mame no Ki was surprisingly good. But a lot of the early Toei movies are indeed boring as shit, you're right. Especially Phantom Ship, that one was awful

They're about 1 hour long, that's basically the same as watching three episodes of a series.

EoE is overrated, People praise it too much for what it's worth. I actually like the NGE ending better, EoE was put on a high horse because a bunch of obsessive weeaboo's didn't have their happy ending. These people then got pissy after there wasn't a happy ending in EoE and became the shitdogged Gundam-posters in every Eva thread.
EoE, In all it's glory. Was exactly the ending Anoo DIDN'T want.
It's entirely the shit that came right out of the trash after Anno shut down Eva on 26, Guaranteed.

While I certainly respect directors' vote over /a/'s any day I think these lists usually focus a bit too much on technical aspects or on influence on the industry.

You know, that is the biggest problem I see in GitS, and the main reason why I don't think it deserves that high a place (haven't watched many films, but surely there must be a bunch better than it).

>that's the first time I've seen someone preferring the original
Probably because of the impact it had when it first came out. It influenced not only anime shows, anime movies, but also manga. Far too many /a/ opinions seem to be evaluating shows only in current 2016 personal taste requirements. To these /a/ posters, the time and influence in history has only a small (or even nil worth) since the pacing and even lack of bold digital color or blurriness of cel lines makes those shows old, decrepit, and irrelevant in modern times to their 2016 eyes.
