I always liked Giorno. A lot of people say he was a lot more fun at the beginning, personally so many of my favorite Giorno moments are actually from the end of the series, like when he's nervous and upset about telling the crew that Buccellati's gone, or when he taunts Diavolo and talks about how the actions of his friends will live on forever and how the arrow was their gift for him. Stone Ocean's main thrust is definitely its story, and even though it has monsters of the week like any other part those plots are kinda secondary (and that's arguably its biggest flaw)
Battle Tendency is more story type since it has almost no minor villains and every fight directly advances the story.
Diamond is kinda half and half. I'd say before Kira it's battle type and after Kira it's mostly story type with a little battle type.

Part 1 was drama with fighting in it eventually and it was pretty good.

Part 2 had drawn out fighting that was against actual enemies in a group setting.

Both had buildup, training and a reason to hate each other.
