Fairly old, actually. Started serialization in 2012, but hasn't really been picked up by any group. Nayukilove has translated chapters 2 and 3 after it was in scanlation hell with only the first chapter translated since 2013. Hoping to get some interest in it going, seeing as it's really one of the better series to come out of Japan in a while.

It at least gives a vaguely(?) better rationale for the Abh conquering humans than the original I remember. It seemed to be unmentioned in the original manga aside from "the four nations is dicks to the empire," and "we conquer humans for shits and giggles because the empire demands it."
I remember three tanks I had when I was a middle schooler from Tokyopop and loved it a lot.

Is this even a business deal for the Abh? They wouldn't have given three shits over who's the boss so long as the planet accepted their rule by hook or crook, right?
I can't help but feel Rock Linn goes, "make me the lord in exc--," and the Abh are like, "Sure, whatever, just surrender."
I mean, they seemed to be going to surrender ANYWAYS. Is this all just Rock Linn going "might as well guarantee myself nobility" in this?

More than anything, the Abh simply seem to be trying to cut of interstellar travel. To lock people into their own solar systems as much as possible. They don't care about planets, because their society lives primarily in space.

>the Abh simply seem to be trying to cut of interstellar travel.
Is there more reason as to why, if you know?

It was a long long time since I read the Tokyopop manga and light novel.

Both never quite fleshed out the Abh beyond dropping the explanation that they were once an artificially-created slave race by some human(?) empire of old that they took over and because they're perfect space elves live in a perfectly ordered mighty empire of beauty.

And for some reason they like keeping conquered space-states in highly-controlled little blocks (which economically, doesn't make the greatest of sense?).

Isn't their entire social system built around "pride" or something? They glorify that attitude. I can only imagine how odd their social interaction must be if the social alpha is probably the biggest stick-in-the-ass upturned-nose dick in the room.

Laffiel makes a relative deal about it somewhere about Jinto manning up for some reason (I think it was early on, since it's where she starts to like/respect him). She says he has a "lot of pride."
It may have been part of the light novel clarifying that they do respect a person's sense of pride however; the appendix for the light novels was excellent for getting a greater hold on the setting.

The anime is from 1999, and while it's not bad, it's extremely dated. There's also the original manga, which is also fairly dated. Your best bet is probably the novels in all honesty. It's only a trilogy, so it's not particularly heavy reading. The biggest problem is that it will be over too soon.

It's not a matter of being clear, it's a matter of being outdated enough that people don't talk about it, which is pretty on point plot-wise.

For all intents and purposes, Abh can fuck, but the pregnancy is carried artifically once the fertilized egg is extracted.

So I guess they just don't bother talking about sex when talking abou reproduction.

Maybe if the topic was 'having fun' the subject of sex would arise. But now that I think about it, they really made it obscure.
>>
>>151793202
Yes they fuck. I don't think it's particularly unclear. They just don't do it for procreation purposes.

Abh still feel pleasure, so of course they'll do that stuff. It's just not required and enough Abh are eccentric fucking weirdos that they probably get their rocks off more by flying in circles or petting cats that it's not the go to. But even the Bibaus crazy ass shits still had relationships with women.
>>
>>151793702

>>151778443

Damn how many series does Habanero provide raws for? I see that name in every other series I read.
>>
>>151791932
My impression was that they focused a bit too much on what I am assuming is extremely rich dialogue in the light novels. The intricate conversations were interesting, but at a certain point they seemed to drag on. There were a few places where they could have cut it, at the cost of interesting but time-consuming things like Abriel needling his CoS about which Bebaus she had a relationship with over the course of two seasons.
>>
>>151791932
I think I may have told you this already a month or two back, but you're really watching this series for the wrong reasons if you're looking for hard sci-fi and pewpew and "things happening."
>>
>>151794305
Habanero is not an actual group, it's just a front that random anons can send their work to for release. The purpose is to give anonymous releases a "group" because MU is dumb and requires one in order to accept releases.
>>

>>
>>151796553
>horrible hack job

How bad was it?
>>
>>151786502
I'm not about to read a MAL review, but I've seen plenty of anons with similarly retarded opinions about how they can't watch the show because they hate the evil space elves too much to sympathize with them. The notion of an empire conquering people really seems to piss people off, it's weird.
>>
>>151796767

First thing was a minor nitpick but they said "we can't do Abh language characters because typography" so they used the same way this manga translation does, however it impacted the readability quite a bit.

Second, to save paper cost they fucking cut pieces of the novels to stay under a certain page count. Yes, the English version was an abridged one.

Then again, we're talking about Tokypop here, the same guys who completely changed the order of the chapters in the only Kino no Tabi novel they published for some reason.
>>
>>151797544
Did they say that they abridged it, or did they leave it for people to figure out for themselves?
>>
>>151797703

As far as I know they didn't say a thing.

Apparently it was "known" only in certain circles. I discovered by chance since someone reported a text detailing all the stuff that was cut in every novel of the original trilogy.

I'm not even sure why it didn't cause any kind of backlash, but I guess in that period very few people cared. Also, I believe they sold like shit - it was part of the "first wave" of LN and novels published in the US which wasn't particularly successful.

What I do know is that it seems the Kino author got so pissed that they rearranged the chapter order that ruled out any other volume release.
>>
>>151796978
>The notion of an empire conquering people really seems to piss people off, it's weird
It is less the consquest aspect of it, and more the author fiating the Abh into supremacy while hammering that they are the good guys, especially with how easily corrupt and revolt prone their empire would be because of how it is set up internally.
>>
>>151798562
The author really does set the abh up as better than normal humans, even though in the story the abh deny this. The Abh never rebel against themselves nor do they partake in flagrant corruption, except in extremely rare cases like the Baron.

I've been trying to found the original source with all the information but that was originally posted on animeondvd, so you can guess how old it was.

I'm not even sure someone is working on Seikai no Senki or not at this point, but given the complexity of the original novel, I doubt it.

It's because the Abh are actually a grey zone empire where everyone drinks the koolaid.

People just buy into the Abh are total good guys thing because that's what the Abh and their closest supporters think and vocalize in the narrative.

Their society is actually a strange blend of ancient aristocracy, Vulkans and a weirdo artist colony, only the art is genetics.

I dont think the abh pretend they are good guys, They just openly state what their goals are and then they carry them out. The four nations on the other hand are hypocrites.

In reality empires tend to be far more corrupt and at least as hypocritical as their democratic counterparts.

>>151801254
And that's certainly present in the Abh, just look at all the Nepotism and focus on Lineage there. You can't tell me that the Bebaus would deserve their rank without the noble name they're touting.

And to the author's credit, the Empire gets its shit kicked around pretty good as the story progresses. We gradually see that the Abh are far from infallible.
>>
>>151801392
Well the Abh are an empire, but they are explicit about it, and the commander and chief is frankly offended at the suggestion that he favors commanders with a noble lineage.

The story itself seems to play the fact that most high ranking commanders have noble blood with the Abh social theory that extraordinary people tend to produce extraordinary protege.
>>
>>151801662
They say it, but there are some pretty clearly incompetent commanders in the Abh ranks that would have no business being there if not for their blood. It doesn't really jive unless you think the Abh nobility are blowing smoke up their own ass.
>>
>>151801392
>>151801731
Weren't the Bebaus relatively good in actual performance, though? They're just dysfunctional faggots and the one has to rein in the other.
>>
>>151801731
If your talking about the Bebaus its clear that before the war most of the Abh commanders had no real battle experience.

and despite being eccentric its clear the bebaus at least understand the basics of tactics

They fucked it up hard several times and then went and took a bath as their fleet died horribly, so I'm gonna go with no.
>>
>>151801952
They fucked up? They were outnumbered 15 to 1 and given a lot of ships which were increasingly antiquated because of their low firepower (assault ships) furthermore the enemy stupidly decided to use all their mines to destroy the Aptic defense fleet rather than save them for the main Abh fleet when it arrived.
>>
I want this translated so bad now having looked at the inferior old manga adaptation.
>>
>>151802037
They were in a bad situation and it as been a pretty good while since I watched the series, but I distinctly remember several decisions during the battle where even the advisor Bebaus went "Whoops, looks like you sure fucked that" with various matters of positioning and timing.
>>
>>151802175
I watched it recently, They were caught off guard by the mine attack, there were too many and it was a new type of mine. Because of this they didn't have the guard ships in place before their front line was decimated.

It was a mistake but not one you would necessarily attribute to incompetence. This was their first real combat and the enemy was using a new weapon in large quantities.

this is also literally false; Abh really could give a shit what you do on your planet so long as they own your spacefaring vessels and trade routes and don't cause trouble in their territory i.e. space.
>>
>>151804442
My god the sheer butthurt in this. God forbid an author present an idea that doesn't run with what you like. Even if the story is compelling he shouldn't even begin to look like he's glorifying something as regressive as imperialism.

I remember watching the series and thinking the Abh were just as bad as the human alliance but since the story followed a guy falling in love with an Abh they didn't focus on that perspective. Between Lafiel venting antimatter onto the baron with no remorse, and Spoor being her usual magnificent self but still rutheless self, I thought the Abh were slightly insane due to their own conditioning.
>>
>>151776477

>>
>>151808152
>insane

The Abh struck me as being, as a species, somewhat autistic. I'm not sure if you can call it conditioning since its genetic and not epigenetic as far as we know, but the Abh penchant for pragmatism/overly logical thinking tends to put them in pretty silly positions, like the fact that they don't give a damn about anything outside of space, or that despite being a distinct race, on the whole they exhibit little to no racial prejudice what with mixed crews and the fact that a non-Abh is prime minister. The exception is Spoor with her "mud turtles" and the half-Abh r/AsianMasculinity baron, but that's about it. Even when the Four Nations are suggesting that Abh are a slave race and not actually human the Abh don't seem to care much at all about it.

On a lot of the fleets there was always some kind of super-pragmatic character normally acting as foil to a slightly mad Admiral who I took to be an Abh par excellence with total lack of humour and perfect willingness to do anything in service to the Empire.
>>
>>151808856

MINES
>>

>>
This series and Altina always seemed pretty similar.

You've got the naive well-intentioned princess and the far more self-aware attendant/right hand man who guides her.

Only difference is, Regis is actually incredibly competent, while the Banner MC is just kind of there.
>>
>>151809452
The Empire is still presented as right about everything, but they aren't invincible.

The Gosrauth is a patrol ship, so basically a battleship, while the ships that destroy it are assault ships, which are smaller and much weaker. I was actually surprised at how weak the Empire ended up being since I automatically assumed that they had some kind of technological edge to get so big in the first place. In battle they're better man for man, but I'd say 1.5 Four Alliance = 1 Abh. In maybe Banner I and definitely Banner III they talk about changing ship designs to suit the war.

The Four Alliance are barely portrayed at all in Banner, but when they are they're either neutral or sort of bad.
>>
>>151809487
The mines make sense in context. You have all this technology, dogfights are probably not the most natural use of it compared to super long range missiles
>>
>>151809712
You would think that their point defense would be good enough a thousand years into the future to not have to worry about mines/missiles.
>>
>>151780190
Bless your heart OP.
>>
>>151809765
Well the things are full of antimatter, And its shown even an indirect hit can destroy a patrol ship, that is a battleship over 1km long. They constantly make the point that a single hit would reduce their assault ship to plasma.

But over all it seems to take alot of mines to destroy a ship in open space.
>>
>>151809765
It seemed like the "normal" mines were just there to make it harder to spot and target the parallel-space torpedos/mines.

Point-defense is probably harder when the mines move through a parallel universe and appear right next to you, from a trajectory that doesn't match the one they were fired from.

A bunch of unmanned weapons is totally worth it to destroy a manned ship.

Also, mines that enter a bubble and get destroyed slow down the ship that they enter the bubble of. So they're also great for delaying and slowing down enemies bit by bit.

I haven't read the LNs, but they touched on it even in the anime. Lafiel said something about the future (maybe the successorship? I can't remember) , and Jinto commented in his thoughts that she was forgetting that he would be old or dead by then. So presumably the author's got it in mind.

I'm pretty sure there's genetic modification that extend your lifespan in that world. Wasn't the United Mankind's MP in the last arc of Crest came from a planet that was widely using that type of modification.
>>
>>151818281
Not sure if that works on a full grown human. Modifying a few cells in an embryo is one thing, and if you screw it up you've lost an egg. Modifying around 37 trillion cells in an actual person would be insanely complicated without causing irreversible damage.

Abh dominated worlds are usually ruled by natives which have been made noble rather than Abh noblemen. Their children WILL be manipulated genetically to be Abh, so they effectively assimilate the leaders of the worlds they conquer.
Jinto's friend actually brings up this point during Crest of the Stars, reminding him that his children will be blue-haired Abhs. We can see this in Baron Febdash's case, him being a human made noble and his son being an Abh. (the second volume of Crest novels, starting around episode 6 in the anime)
Also, it is often repeated that Abh hold little to no interest in the planets themselves, as they are first of all an interstellar mechant empire, nobility being the traders.
>>151780770
There's 3 Crest of the Stars (Seikai no Monshou) novels, and 5 Banner of the Stars (Seikai no Senki) ones, the lastest came out in 2013. And then there's Birth (Seikai no Danshou), which is a side-story collection. Only the Crest novels were translated, as Tokyopop went under. The Anime and the OVAs only cover the story up to the third Banner novel, I believe (The OVA was Banner of the Stars III, so I might just be assuming things, as it came out a year after the 4th Banner novel). There's also the Birth OVA.
>>

We almost have it in the real world, for fixing the problem caused by some well known genetic diseases.
Once some of the root causes of old age are identified, there could well be some easy targets for gene therapy that could extend our lifespan.
Obviously it'd be a lot easier to fix a few cells in an embryo, and true biological immortality would likely be out of reach for existing humans, but it could well be possible to extend their lifespan by decades or centuries.
The fact that he's still fairly young helps a lot as there's less accumulated damage to deal with.
>>
>>151823659
Watch the anime first, but then go back and read those three chapters (and not the earlier manga adaptation, which wasn't very good). There's a bit of backstory that gets skipped in the anime which the manga has, so it'll help flesh out the universe a bit more. Also, the manga's interpretation of Lafiel is pretty interesting. It plays up the mischievous (and more seductive, incidentally) side of her, as opposed to the anime which makes her a bit more formal.

That being said, you'll never be able to properly get across in a text translation the precise nuance of her "yurusu ga yoi", which I feel the anime has to perfection.

Manga's pace is 4 chapters per year. Start learning Japanese now and you'll be able to read the rest in two years.
>>
>>151818502
>But that very obviously doesn't imply that they can modify all your cells to make you immortal
Isn't there that one guy in Crests who was modified and had lived for several centuries. But the side effect is that he became slightly deranged? I think that was meant to take genetic modification to Jinto off the table.
>>
>>151824429
NO that guy is only 48 or 49. His grandfather had the treatment but it is unclear if it was invitro or not.

The Abh themselves can live 200-250 years but eventually their brains start to age and they are genetically programed to die before they become senile
>>
>>151824429
That was not a modification. The Abh don't extend their lifespan beyond 200 years because beyond that they go senile or become deranged.
>>
>>151824386
>Start learning Japanese now
That's about same effort level required for graduating from wizardry.
Rare occurrence.
>>
>>151821693
I must've forgotten then, thank you.
>>151824429
>But the side effect is that he became slightly deranged?
I'm pretty he went mad because of what United Mankind did to him and his people and how the Abh seem to always get a happy ending, I would be mad too.
>>151824499
>programed to die before they become senile
So that's why there's no old Abh, I thought they all look twenty forever.
>>
>>151826183
The abh dont physically age past 30, but their brains slightly break down over time.

>>151821693
No, but he did say he did a poor job raising him. Over all he seemed to have an inferiority complex nurtured further by isolating himself from other Abh.

His sister is completely normal, by abh standards anyway

I would kill for a good 4x or Tabletop RPG of this game. The world is so interesting but I know so little of the world since the Banner novels aren't translated and the Anime is good, but I know it missed details.

Plus I want to just study Abh Culture, as well as United Mankind politics. Are there any good sites to read up on this stuff?

I stand corrected. I forgot that he had a sister.

There is strategy a game out there, for the PSX.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kvaHP3QCfvg
Note that the commentary is in french.
However, much like all those anime tie-in games, it was never translated and is quite obscure, so even finding an ISO would be difficult.
As for learning about the setting, have this website for baronh:
http://dadh-baronr.s5.xrea.com/intl/en/index.html
You will still have some digging to do.
>>
>>151830167
>>151830470
There's also a PC one.
http://kinofthestars.heavenforum.org/t110-seikai-no-senki-for-the-pc
>>
Friendly reminder that only the Abriels are knife-ears.
The rest of the Abhs are merely blue haired humans which happen to be young during their whole liftime of about two centuries.
>>
>>151830470
>You will still have some digging to do.
No I appreciate this. I don't have the kind of memory to really wrap my brain around sci-fi setting that get super detailed, But I'm always fascinated by the authors who go to such lengths to construct their worlds.

>PSX and PC game
The PS1 game looks funky. Never seen a tactical screen like it before. Combat looks like like that one Nintendo DS game that Platinum made. Kind of like a rock/papers/scissors deal.

I have a feeling that space-Hitler would be more concerned with cleaning up degeneracy within his own nation than in warring with the Abh. I really only see him advocating war if there really is no decent unclaimed lebensraum for his people to expand into.
>>
>>151837257
That is actually the main motivation of the four nations. The Abh have taken over the outer ring of plane space, thought by many to lead to other galaxies. While the four nations never say it The empress thinks this is the main motive behind the invasion.

she's 100% definitely related. imo the improved version, but the original is decent too.

also related is Infinite Ryvius; there's a spot where you can splice together Stars OP and Yume wo Sugitemo and you wouldn't notice a difference. and, what a coincidence, it's the same composer.

>Tabletop RPG
That's going to be hard to make, there's so little knowledge of the settting beside the Abh's Empire so you can't make much story points for a campaign and interstellar travel is restricted so it's going to be a very linear/railroady plot. And you still need to find a way to balance between Abh characters and normal human characters.
>>151830470
>In the beginning of the game you choose four out eight crewman. Then you you choose your fleet composition. There are 65 stages and the story is split between two routes: "Assault Unit Fleet" or "Special Duty Fleet". The main character will have three kinds of ending so to see all the ending you have to replay the game over and over.
That sound interesting, would probably be impossible to find an ISO though.
>>
>>151780932
yeah crest ended with them escaping, reporting the incident, the war begins and he heads to the academy. iirc crest adapts everything my english novel contained. but, banner novels are larger, so I'd assume they cut quite a bit from the first two tv runs and obviously the third was super condensed.

>That's going to be hard to make
Mechanically it depends on how you treat it. I was thinking more along the lines of Jovian Chronicles/Lightning Strike. Rules to allow for miniatures to stand in for space fleets and some abstracted rules to deal with land engagements and social interactions.

The lack of information though is the main weakness. It could only be an Abh centered campaign with as much information as we do have. Although if the author were to give more insight into the United Mankind and how they utilize hyperspace that would open the campaign up to less railroady plots.

At the end of the day though, it could just be a wargame and stats would be provided for ship classifications and abilities dependent on which commanders are in power. But there are already two vidya for that.
>>
>>151845732
Never tried Jovian Chronicles or Lighting Strike before, so each PCs would be a captain of their ship or lead their own fleets?
>>
>>151846145
Well Jovian Chronicles has you playing mech pilots. But the company Deep Pod 9 also runs a wargaming branch that is Lightning Strike. Both games have rules to stat out large ships and for hex grid based combat for vessels of all sizes. Nowadays they really only focus on the wargaming aspect of their games and sell miniatures and such.

Given that combat in Crest/Banner takes place in 2 dimensions it's prime ground for wargaming.
