It was directed like that and it could be presented much better. Not only the ending, i just forgot to add, but most of the "rom" scenes felt very unnatural, like characters were obliged to say things in the most bland and forced way possible. Compare that to first season's fluidness and suspense in the key scenes with smart and indirect clues about relationships between people created by editing, pace, voice acting - all without wall of pointless lengthy wall of dialogue lines. You seen them as real human beings and saw their motivations, feels, fears changing and moving through the world that you believed in. Now there's only bunch of talking heads bragging in the set of decorations, in the most theatrical way possible compared to first seasons language of true cinematography.

But the entire point is that Hachiman avoids those feelings because he is damaged goods. That has been there in season 1 as well as in season 2. Only in season 2 he's starting to mellow out and be more open towards it, but he's obviously still afraid of interpersonal relationships.
