Here is an idea to make an Isekai story interesting: to make good Isekai, it has to be suffering porn, edgy, and it has to have to a MC that faces some opposition.

So what you do is you pull a merciless double-Isekai.

Another character can get Isekaied as a third party to break the deadlock, or maybe the MCs figure out they have to work together, or maybe the only way to break the loop is for both of them to die at the same time, following which they become mythical figures in the fantasy world (and in the epilogue, two more people from our world turn up there... and it turns out people getting Isekaied there is how the legends of that world are born).

About Harry Potter, I agree it might not be an epic literature piece. And what I am arguing is that worldbuilding and storytelling is so much more than just exploring folklore and expanding it.

It is also about making the pieces connect together. There has been only a handful of works (anime/manga related) that have achieved this.

And because there are so few of them, it is truly enjoyable when you come across such a piece.

Not everyone needs to be great at writing, drawing or even at worldbuilding. But sometimes I wish people put a bit more effort in balancing these.

It's not the use of attributes itself that's bad, it's that it tempts the writer into fucking up the pacing of the story. Arifureta and Re:Monster started off interesting when it was a struggle for survival, but now both MCs are demi-gods. Without struggle, there's no excitement. It's like playing an RPG with gameshark codes to get infinite health and mana.

There's an isekai where a girl is reborn as a weak little spider. It's pretty far along, but still great because the author used the power-ups very sparingly.

The only non-comedy focused isekai I really like right now is Chihou Kishi Hans no Junan, as the MC is a natural inhabitant of the fantasy world who has to deal with all the Japs being sent there en masse all of a sudden. It's a great read, in that all the isekai'd are treated as people, rather than the insanely determined gary stu's, and are mostly just grateful for him finding them work and lodging.

Blandy McBland is killed one day after a fire broke out in his apartment, only to reawaken in a new universe...as a still molten freshly born planet.

there can be obscurity that the reader interprets, but if you leave too much to the user then you ruin the suspension of disbelief.

Letting the reader interpret things is good in some places, but not when it comes to major rules of the world.

If your characters do things that are too far outside of the rules of the world that have been established and it affects the plot, then the story is going to be ruined. This happens all the time in writing, and is huge in the 'asspull' community.

Let the readers interpret some things, but lay down ground rules that the world works within.
You also can't suddenly have some "foriegn empire that we're at war with" if the empire is literally never mentions for the majority of the story. It's too sudden, it needs to be introduced. That kind of world building is hard because you are required to prepare your major plot events ahead of time and work within them. Most writers want to just "write" and don't realize that like all things in life it's a process of planning and developing and revision. It's why indiegames flop or are shit, people don't plan things out.
