The really sad thing about NoWaYu is that an awful lot of what’s happened has been down to the Heroes own deficiencies. Wakaba would have been an almost perfect leader if, memeing aside, she was more intelligent. If Wakaba wasn’t more intelligent, then Anzu would also have been an almost perfect leader if she was more powerful. If Yuna hadn’t been so retiring and reluctant to step forward, and had accepted Wakaba’s implicit offer of taking over as leader near the beginning, she would probably have been the best suited out of all of them to keep them functioning as a team even if all the others problems were the same.

If Chikage hadn’t have been so mentally disturbed then she wouldn’t have fallen so quickly to the trump cards effects; essentially she died and became unloved because she was so afraid of dying and becoming unloved.

If Hinata knew how to handle Wakaba better-and she doesn’t know how to handle her properly at all, despite her constant bragging to the contrary, chapter six and seven showed that-then she could have guided Wakaba into being a better and more attentive leader before her actions put Yuna into a coma, or at least made her keep a better handle on Chikage so that she didn’t go so drastically downhill (especially since Hinata was the only one who knew about Chikage’s past). I think NoWaYu (unlike YuYuYu and you-know-what) is an actual deconstruction of the MG genre. You've got the dumb leader, the shy but intelligent girl, the loud and stupid girl who's friends with the shy girl, the optimistic girl who manages to make things turn out right when she shouldn't be able to and the pervy 'team mom' who knows how to handle them all. In any other series they'd manage just fine, but their bad traits get them killed, their good traits don't amount to anything and unlike in most MG series the world knows about them and treats them like shit when things go south. Chikage especially would angst for a while and then get cured by the power of friendship, but that didn't happen here, her mental problems destroyed her.

I think Chikage was a smart take on the Dark Magical Girl trope. Never thought too much about the others.

Also, giving a sad fate to all characters or making them socially inept doesn't mean it is a deconstruction. Unless Yuuna's mind slipping means Show ten doujin taking over, she was 90% a straight brave girl archetype, with that 10% being her sexuality.

The main problem is that the bad guys are just too powerful. In most magical girl shows, the monsters are a struggle but never actually seriously threaten their lives or anything. Even in YuYuYu, the heroes don't have too much of a problem up until the final battle. NoWaYu takes those magical girl tropes and ups the strength of the Vertex in relation to the heroes, and it results in deficiencies that would've been nothing more than humour and characterisation in most shows killing them.
I don't think you can blame the heroes, after all they are just middle school girls, they did the best they could. The Vertex are just more powerful than they could handle.

Thinking about it, Tamako and Anzu appeared in chapter 2 and died in chapter 13, so if NoWaYu ends on chapter 20 then they were only in just over half of it. Hinata had better do something really important before the end to justify the amount of 'screentime' she had in the first half which could have been spent on them and Chikage instead.
