It was half and half.

In the manga natsu prays to the god to make machi give up on going to the city. That night she has nightmares about city people throwing rocks at her and she wakes up and tearfully tells natsu the she doesn't want to go to the city. The next day they happily eat cake natsu ordered to be delivered off of amazon and machi thinks "Amazon Saito" is a person from south america. From there the manga focuses on village life for a few chapters before machi takes interest in modern technology and city stuff again.

The anime extended the crappy idol bits, they went to the actual city, Yoshio admits to just using her, she has legitimate hallucinations, made her look a lot more upset in the scene where she gives up on living in the city as well as dragging the scene out, and in the post credits scene is acting extra childish and they changed the joke to "Internet Saito" which ruins it.
