Except YOI is a hit even with normies. The problem with All Out in my opinion is that it's both too gay and not gay enough. Their designs are erotic and they always have slutty expressions but there are no actual romantic developments between any of the male characters.

Forgot to mention, team size is always an issue in sports series and since rugby has 15 guys on the field plus reserves, there's far more strain in trying to round out its characters than say a basketball series with 5 guys on court and reserves. I think that's part of the reason why 15 (the ultragay rugby manga) got shitcanned. After introducing the two MCs, it threw the rest of the main team at you at once and it came across as scattered because of it. It was also trying way too hard to be homo.

There's only about twenty-five to thirty people on /a/ watching it based on the size of the last two threads I sat in. I enjoy it, but I don't think it's been well-received by the /a/ userbase and there's not as much to talk about in a given episode as there is with other shows. I'd say that the fujos and gays who would've most likely been watching it were distracted by other airing series, but the only real competitors were Haikyuu, YoI, SB69, and IBO, so I think it's the character designs that's turning most people away. They see caps of Sekizan/Ebumi/Matsuo and assume that everyone looks like that. It's probably best the YoI audience didn't watch it, because I sat in on a few threads and they were concentrated cancer. All that said, I have a feeling we might pick up a few newbies during the break between seasons.

Aiming to become a national champion is the plot of almost every sports anime, kouhai. The main basic structural subdivide is whether or not the MC has playing experience. All Out, Baby Steps, YowaPeda, and Eyeshield 21 have MCs with no experience, while stuff like Ookiku Furikabutte, Haikyuu, and KnB had MCs with some experience. But that reminds me that I wanted to get back to Haikyuu at some point.
