People like Jinbei because he's a chill bro with some of the most hardcore loyalty in an entire manga worth of incredibly loyal people. He has a fun still mostly unexplored fighting style, some really neat moments in the war like when he stared down Akainu for Luffy.

I think my favorite Jinbei moment is when he caught Akainu's followup blow on Ace with his bare hand and got burned for it. His friend was dying and he and they all knew it, but he refused to let his body get desecrated more because that's just the guy he is.

When there were less SHs and the manga had a simpler pace/focus, there was much more interaction and banter between crewmembers. So the original quintet kinda got better established personalities than the rest of the cast. You can add Vivi to the same group, Chopper is borderline.

From Alabasta onwards the story started getting super big arcs with lots of factions and side characters and chapters/pages/panels started focusing on many different things simultaneously so it's been ever harder for Oda to really build his characters outside of pre-designated story relevant scenes or small panel sidegags.

TB was good and Brook in TB was a good character worthy of joining the SHs. The problem is as I mentioned above, once they're in the ride they just become part of the charactersoup that is every arc where the focus has to be split so many different ways (including arc-exclusive characters who tend to get the main development), that it's hard to build a sense of each crewmembers' presence in the minute dealings of the others. With someone like Brook who got added so late into the story this problem is at its worst and since he isn't AS gimmicky/instantly memorable like Franky with his weird robot shit and catchphrases, he feels way too minor for a main party member.

This is also something I fear might happen to whoever joins the crew at this point. They just wouldn't have been through enough shit with them for any attachment to feel real. No 3D2Y (it was already a stretch for Brook and even Franky I'd say), no worrying about their captain's mental state, no collective milestone achievements like crossing the Reverse Mountain or reaching the NW, no real journey to speak of. I don't particularly care one way or the other about it but I think the Fleet thing was a wise move by Oda precisely because of this phenomenon.

Oda is really smart in the way he's managing his different characters. That's one of his best quality. He know how much exposure they need to stay interesting.

Like the way he handled Law was really nice. He put the "edgy good looking dude" into the light for a long time (as a lot of fans wanted) but added moment when they were making fun of him and characters disrespecting him (Barto). He din't overshadow the rest of the cast. And he made him leave the story as soon as needed.

He also loves making people look bad for a certain amount of time only to give them a really big moment after to add contrast and power to their big scene. The God Usopp one was so funny. Everyone was like "huh i hate Usopp, useless character blabla" for a month and then he had one of the best scene in the whole manga to shut your mouths. I'm telling you Sanji will get something real. Same goes for Kid.
