This is one of the few animes I've rewatched a second time, and I enjoyed it a lot both times.
Maybe it's just a genre that doesn't appeal to you?

For me, almost all characters are interesting and likeable, there are some highs and lows in the story arcs, not all are great, but it's overall enjoyable.

Also, while I hate the concept of waifu, if I had to pick one female character to love in all anime, that would be Hachikuji.

I haven't read the novels, so I can't say anything about differences in style.

While I agree that some things are there to be purely fanservice (for either your dick or your brain), I think in general this anime is to be taken more lightly than people who dislike it do.

In my opinion, this is not about deep existential meaning, it is about the relationships between characters, developed with sometimes long and futile conversations.

Sadly, part of the fun and wittiness of the show is lost in translation, they play a lot on words and Japanese culture, and most things don't translate well in English.

Some small parts of it are actually pretty deep, but in general, in my opinion, this anime doesn't even try to be deep.

Pretentious would imply that it presents itself as having deeper meaning while failing to deliver that meaning. Shinbo's direction might make it seem pretentious because it's hyper-arthouse, but the narrative delivers on it multiple times over.

Because Monogatari DOES have meaning. It fucks with the harem genre and both overplays and disregards tropes. It's a layered story about highschoolers battling abstract representations of their psychological problems. The characters are nuanced people with depth that could very well exist in real life. And it's also social commentary through the characters' parents or guardians completely disregarding the problems that are destroying their children's lives based on them "just being kids".

Calling Monogatari pretentious or saying it has no deeper meaning are both equally retarded statements which indicate that you either haven't watched/read it or didn't pay attention.

The key is the language, and the direction fitting it, mostly. That's what made it so interesting for the Japanese audience.

If you watched it with a sub of course you are gonna miss all of the small banters and puns and little jokes. It's not like this is some literary masterpiece but clever language in any culture entertains people more than almost anything else and that's what made the characters so likable and memorable--everything else in anime, especially LN adaptations, are literally in language spoken by children and retards.

Even though Monogatari isn't fundamentally so different than other anime series, it's easy for someone to feel clever and entertained watching it, and apparently enough of those people are willing to buy.

Bake was Fresh. Kizu is good storyboard wise but that color scheme is fucked. The padding they added to each movie to reach the 1 hour mark is fucked.
It all could've been done in a 2:30 movie or two 1:15 movies.

It's just Shinbo & SHAFT you asshats. Because it is such a good novel series, bringing Monogatari to a visual medium has no real storytelling benefit. It just makes it easier to sell. Why is that staircase there? Why are the colors like this? Why was the shot composed as such? Because it looks cool. There's nothing more to it than that. Is there something wrong with that? I can assure you there are bigger problems in the industry and even within this very anime than a director creating something that looks cool. It makes it easier to watch and that's all that was needed. There are more types of eye candy than just panty shots, you know. There doesn't have to be some deep meaning behind everything that isn't a generic background or shot. Yes, a lot of people have in the past overanalyzed these decisions at autistic levels. But if your entire gripe with the series is that some autistic shits took it way too seriously, maybe you should take a step back and reconsider watching anime as a whole.

I never said or implied anything of the sort. Bake's biggest issue was going full powerpoint, but the story was some of the roughest as well. SS's mid arcs getting rushed affected everything. Hana was bad because Kanbaru is poor as a narrator and Rouka is the worst character in the series from every possible standpoint, but it was animated perfectly fine.

Learn Japanese, watch something without subs, and then you can come back with your argument.
You simply cannot translate most of this anime's jokes and subtle things without losing 90% of their effect. That is because of both language and cultural barrier.
Often they would make some words play, using words with the same sound, or mixing kanji in weird ways.

Just to make an example, I wonder if you know what's funny about how Kaiki explains his own name's meaning. Because this is one of the many things that are completely lost in the translation.

I want to see Shinobu in the end of Kizu 3.
